Sump Help

So I just picked up a 40B and 20L from Petco since they are having their $1/gallon sale. I currently have a 40B, but I want to add a sump, which is what the 20L will be for. My plan is to drill the new 40B and ultimately transfer everything over. I've only been doing SW for 6 months so I'm pretty clueless when it comes to sumps. I'm looking at getting the glassholes super nano with teeth overflow box (300 gph) and a Mag 7 pump. As far as plumbing goes...I really don't know. I'm on a college budget, so I'm very slowly gathering everything that I need. Will this overflow box and return pump be suitable for my needs?

To start the mag 7 will overpower that overflow big time. That overflow can only handle 200gph constantly. So a mag 3 Would be a better fit.

Also glassholes is set way to go, very easy to install and very quite.

I'm glad to hear that because I'm definitely set on going with them. As for the Mag 3, I feel like that's not going to be enough after head pressure. Which is why I wanted to go with the Mag 7, I figured after head pressure it would be flowing at around 500 gph. The Overflow box says it's good for 300 gph. Where am I wrong? lol

500 gph after head loss and overflow only handles 200gph equals an overflowing tank.... you want the gph of the pump after head loss to be 200gph

If a mag 7 is going to be too much you can try tapping off the return to a couple of reactors as a bonus. Also a valve might be necessary to throttle back some of the return.

I have to agree that a MAG 3 would be ideal. Just used RC's Head Loss Calculator and making some guess with elbows and height, came up with 240 gph. The MAG 7 with same height and elbows was at 414. If you still wish to use the MAG 7, I would not put a valve directly on the return line because of the negative impact on the pump. You're better off putting a tee on the return line that goes back to the sump were the valve is on the pipe returning to the sump. Here's what I'm talking about...note the valve is not in the picture, located all the way to the right.

Another option is to get a DC pump. Adjustable flow to your liking. I am only running about 3x tank volume and it's perfect. That's 120gph for you. More flow more noise.

I have your setup (40B and 20L sump)

I'm using the G-H 700 kit and would not use anything less than that on a 40B.

I am using a Sicce Syncra 3.0 (714 GPH) and a SCWD that drops it down a little more. The Syncra is also adjustable right out of the box without any additional plumbing, but the flow at 100% is just right.

Your close enough to stop by and check it out if you want.

I also have a 40B running right now with a 700 kit. wouldnt go less as Brian mentioned above.

Now that you mentioned that, I do remember seeing your set up last time I was there and I really liked it. I'll be getting the 700 kit then. So the Mag 7 would work, right?

I will now be getting the 700 kit lol
