Sump Modifications

Please bear with. This is my first run at a SW tank. I an going to start a 38 G tank, sometime this week. I have an Amiracle Pro-Line Filter Model 3000. (Don't worry I used the bioballs for a FW Wet/dry filter. My question is do I plumb the protein skimmer in line with the water coming in from the overflow (Like the pic shows)or do I set it up as a HOB on the side of the sump.

Here's a pic of the sumphttp://www.tplastech.com/amiracle/filters_prolineseries.htm.

Also do I need to add any other modifications to this filter. Just so you know I've been doing FW for 20 + years, and can build practically anything so modifications are not a problem.

Thanks

You can run it just the way it is right now. We ran ours like that until we plumbed through the floor. Ours was not a particularly productive skimmer. Hopefully yours does a better job!

Thanks for the welcome,

I have a coralife skimmer I bought used. I've read some people dont like them but for $20.00 I figured it was good enough to start with. I bought the Sump for $20.00 also, it didnt come with the skimmers, thats why I asked.

Thanks again. Im sure I'll have a ton of questions as they come up.

I am not that familiar with that particular sump, but maube you should have that particuar skimmer "off-line" rather "inline" from your overflow's return. The reason is that the overflow's flow could be either stronger then what the skimmer can handle, in which case you could get a spill, or too weak in which case you don't have enough skimming. Just something to think about it.

mladencovic makes 2 good points. I know people bash the Coralife skimmer but I just bought a complete setup and they were using a Coralife skimmer. I was amazed by the skimmate it produced because I have only heard mostly negative things about them. Luckily you didn't spend a lot for it so if you feel it is not performing as well as you'd like then it won't be as painful to upgrade.

Thanks for the input. I was told by the guy I bought the skimmer from to run it offline. I just wanted to confim. Also The overflow will handle about 600 GPH. Do you think the reurn back to the tank will have too much pressure. Should I split the return? Would I need to add a powerhead to this setup as well as the return. I am using the same overflow and pump on my 125G Frontosa tank. The return does move the water well in the 125G tank but its a lot larger than this tank.

I would always add a powerhead with the return. It all depends on what you put in there but generaly speaking the more flow the better.

I started plumbing the sump. Here's some pics. I haven;t cemented the PVC yet. Tommorrow I'll work on the Durso pipe and the return.
