sump/overflow help

I recently setup my 135, I have a 30 gallon sump w/ a mag 18 return that has a ball valve restricting flow.

For the life of me I can't figure out why the sump is so loud. It sounds like a freaking hot tub fizzling bubbles.

I have a very small hole drilled in the top of the durso standpipe top and the drain pipe into the sump submerged 2 inches from the water line.

Any ideas? If anyone is in NNJ and wants to coem take a look I'd appreciate it.

OK this one I can help with I hope.
First make sure that none of you drain hoses have dips in them this results in a flushing sound. (yes my living room sounded like a public bathroom)

Next the small holes are fine but you may or may not want them. Will at AO gave me a great tip if you have some small airline valves you can put on in the holes to adjust the flow. I didn't do this but did end up plugging one of my holes with some filter floss.(real professional huh?)

Finally see if adjusting your ball valve will cut the sound down. I eventually Td the return to run my TLF reactor. The more flow you have coming into your DT from the pump the more more waterfall sound you will end up with.

If you can adjust your stand pipes try that too the lower they are in your surface skimmer the louder the noise.

I finally put it all together and have ended up with a fairly quiet system as far as the sump goes. That Mag 18 is going to pump a lot of water, I only have a Mag 12 FYI.

I'll take a picture of the setup to give you an idea of the drains.

I'm going to go and see if I can get a piece of small airline tubing and put it in the durso top.

I don't really have a waterfall sound so much as it is the sound of a hot tub bubbling noise. The water falling into the overflow isn't loud at all.

There is a lot of different little things that can be doing this, and a lot of little things to fix it. Pics will help. Try to raise your drain pipe about an inch above the water

Restricting the flow on a mag 18 will cause a lot of noise. Just remove the ball valve and let it flow freely, the noise should reduce.
Once you know that is the case, try a smaller pump with unrestricted flow.

running the drain into filter socks reduce the flush. but will cause a nitrate factory. must insert into husbandry for the minimum week or biweekly.

the mag18 isn't really loud at all. I think it might be because the pump is too powerful. I'll figure it out eentually just setup my rkl so that's good.

I never noticed noise with my Mag pump for what it is worth. At least with the ball valve you can tune it to see what is what with the water sound.

HatsTHat's true I'll lower the flow with the valve more and see if that's the case. If it is I think I'm going to pickup a mag 12. I have 2 mp40 for flow so I'm good there.

Noise and reliabilty wise for the cost the Mag is great.
Heat entirely different story.
With the Mag 18 you can run a good manifold size wise.

You possibly may have an air bubble caught in the down draft pipe.
Its sounds horrible, I shake the pipe to move the bubble that usually does it.
Or you can shorten the flexible hose for a straight run south, no loops.

Take a picture of what you got going on. It might give us some idea of what is going on.

If you do have a bubble, you can keep your hand over the overflow and close off the vent to the drain, let the tank fill up and let it start a full syphon, this will flush it out for sure if thats the problem

After tinkering with everything I've determined the cause of most noise.

THE F____ING skimmer!!! I added a ball valve mod to it (similar to the gate valve), but instead of doing a 90 to the ball to a 90 down I did a T to the ball to the 90

I BELIVE that if I remove that T and replace it with a 90 that the noise will be gone.

Otherwise if I unplug the skimmer things are quiet enough that if I have my computer on and fans going I can barely hear it.

I still have a slight bubble sound, but I think that is from my one side of the return plumbing.

The second pipe on the far right is the drain line coming from the overflow. The return lines were replaced with flex hose.
