Sump

Ok. I have a nicely behaved and quite friendly 70 gal sump. But I'm wondering if it's at all useful for my new build. I considered converting my 150 into a sump but it is heavy and not very polite. New tank will be 300 gal. Those with larger tanks what do you have?

Originally I was going to have the new tank upstairs between the kitchen and den. But the opening i was gonna put it in is only 9 feet. miscalculated so it's gong in the basement. Sump is most likely going under tank. So no fish room :(. It will still be a penninsula seep rating 2 areas of the finished basement.

I'd suggest at minimum two 100 gallon rubbermaid stock tank piped together, one as the sump the other as a fuge.

Love the idea. Do you know the dimensions ? I'm really trying to find a way to not have it be under the tank (in stand). I'm spoiled cause I have my current sump in a closet behind my dt. I don't have to bend!

The stock tanks are 48" x 32" so they wouldn't fit under. I have two, one on top of the other with 2 feet of space above each.

I used a 120 4x2x2 as my sump, it was acrylic. If you can find something like that or have one made, it will probably be your best bet. Lighter than glass so easier to work with, and should fit under your tank. I think 70g could work, but the more water the better.

I will prob use my glass 70 for now. I have a glass 100 but it's my wife's and it has her cichlids in it. I want to get rid of them but.... I had intended for this tank to go upstairs and have a fish room below it but the design didn't make my wife happy. So I'm doing an under the tank sump. Restricts a lot of what I was going to do.... But I'm still pondering configurations.

You're fortunate that your still planning and have options. IMO the system water should be at least double the capacity of the display tank. It's good to plan the display tank around the sump and fuges rather than the other way around. It's similar to farmers first building the barn before the house. Just some thoughts

If there is a place you can put the fish room behind the DT in another room for instance that is a great alternative. Ed had that setup which was very nice.

Give ultra corals a call and see what a 120 acrylic sump would go for. If you are going to be completely under the stand, I would probably want as much room as possible in my sump. That is provided you have room for ATO container, dosing containers (if needed), and other equipment. You have the luxury of time and building the stand yourself to properly plan it all out, I would design it all and then make your choice. Also, start researching skimmers now as one of the big issues people run into under stand is skimmer height and being able to get the collection head off.
