Surround Sound Recommendations

I picked up a 55 inch Samsung Boobtube and would like to add a surround sound unit to the TV. Any recommendations? Or what should I be looking for?

What's your budget? Are you looking for an out of the box, plug and play system, or are you willing to do it piece meal?

Well it also depends on your room setup. Are you able to run wires for rear speakers? Do you want wireless? Do you want system that makes you think that you have rear speakers (BOSE)? Do you want 5.1? Do you want 7.1?

My family room with my 67 in behemoth I have a 5.1 surround sound. When I did the addition on to my house, I wired the room for rear speakers up on the wall at the ceiling, along with speakers that could get mounted on the wall where the TV is, but pictures are actually hung over the connectors.

So the layout could have a alot to do with it. You could always run the wires under the carpet if you are able to (if there is carpet).

See what kind of setup you think you could use then see what is out there. Unless you really plan on watching movies and having it blasting most systems will do.

I actually like to play Guitar Hero on the Xbox when no one is home and I crank it.. it ROCKS, (no pun intended)

I don’t know….lets say $500 just to throw a dart at a price, but I could be talked into up to around $1000….but again, I don’t know! How much do I need?

One more bit of information; I have a tin ear. If you don’t believe me, ask me to sing something.

I’ll do what will work…so I could go either way. I know nothing about these systems. Electronics is not my thing. That’s why I’m asking. I’m pretty much an idiot.

One word BOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not enough information…..which one?

Well it also depends on your room setup. Are you able to run wires for rear speakers? Do you want wireless? Do you want system that makes you think that you have rear speakers (BOSE)?

Can go either way with wired versus wireless. I still have the wall opened up because of running new cable to the TV. So I could easily run the speaker wires for rear speakers (or go wireless). Know nothing about Bose’s speaker setup….does that really work, thinking you have rear speakers when you actually don’t?

…….. Do you want 5.1? Do you want 7.1?……

What??? Maybe if you say it a little slower I’ll get it. Did I mention I’m an idiot? I have no idea what you’re taking about.

HAHAHAH yes the bose systems are really good. My buddy has one, and sound is great! If you do have a tin ear then might not matter to be honest. My surround sound system is 10 years old..

5.1 is 6 speakers...
2 rear
3 at TV, (left center right)
Subwoofer (.1)

7.1 is 8 speakers.
2 rear
1 right (in between you and the TV on the right)
1 left (in between you and the TV on the right)
3 at TV (left center right)
Subwoofer (.1)

Goto the Bose store and check out their systems, they are very good, but no way you will get one for $500.

Anthony, thanks for educating the idiot! I would venture that the 5.1 is sufficient for my tin ear application. I think I'll also check out Sam's, since we are members.

Sony

I just got the Sony wireless system with thr Blueray player for Christmas. LOVE IT!! Works great.
I would definately recomend it.

Paul,

go check with Bob (magic), he is a pro...

last weekend, he helped me to pick up "something" from Electronics-Expo...
:p

one word of advise (to you) --- DO NOT get Denon brand Receiver, the sounds may be good, BUT the setup/configurations will definitely drive you insane!

the quality of these systems mostly (Note: i did not said all) pretty much right on the $.... the more expensive they are, the better quality they would be.

I understand that you want some thing good... BUT, if you really got a Tin ear, then may be you should goto Sam's club, find something (as a whole system package) which suit your budget and look nice along with your home's decor, and bring it home, that would be it! if you don't like it later, return it!

Good Luck and have fun Shopping!
:encouragement:

That's the one. I would like to get a new one for my house, but my damn tank has cost me way too much! And I am a fragoholic, and can't stop buying!!

You know how the saying goes, "No highs, no lows, must be Bose!"

I personally am not a fan. I find the sound rather hollow. Honestly, I dont know if you have anything like it in your area, But there are a few Home theater stores in cherry hill/ this area. I got mine from Tweeter when they were open on rt38 in moorestown.

bose your paying for the name. roughly 8-10x so.

Kevin, thanks for the info. Just read all the reviews and it stated it’s good for a small room, but not a large one. Well, this will be going into a small room, so it’s perfect. And so I just placed the order with Amazon. Again, thanks for pointing me in this direction, not to mention the unbelievable price. Should be here by about the 20[SUP]th[/SUP].

Onkyo HT-S3400 5.1-Channel Home Theater System

Now my next “electronic” question is Wii or xBox?

I am an un-fan of Bose, I don't think they give good value. My system has a Sony multimedia receiver that acts as the switching center for everything, a Polk Audio subwoofer, Polk center channel and four Polk Audio surround speakers. I like it a lot although I have too much tinnitis to be an audiophile. I bought everything through J&R music in the NYC. I pulled wire in the walls for 7.1 but I have never hooked up the speakers because there aren't that many 7.1 Blu-Rays yet, just wanted to have the option.
