Tank Care at the LFS

I have been to probably 12 different LFS over the past 6 months and it always makes me nervous to buy from them when they do not seem to make any efforts to maintain their tanks.

I went to one high priced LFS and they had bubble algae all over their corals. It was so bad, while I was looking at the corals all of sudden my vision was blocked by all of the bubble algae floating past that the powerhead head had just sucked up and spit out.

Not sure if this is any more than a rant, but I guess maybe I am wondering if my expectations are too high.

And I am not talking about the occasional corals that any LFS can get....I am talking about the real messes.

It seems I gave the wrong impression. Easily 9 of the 12 LFS I visited had there tanks in good shape including AO and Hidden Reef. I have yet to go to Trop.

I was really just remarking/ranting how any LFS can have so little care of their tanks and then expect customers to be ok with that. Which is why I did not buy anything at those stores.

Not much value add to this post I guess, just me venting.

I hear what you are saying. There is one LFS close to me that makes me sick every time I go in there. 75% of the fish always have ich or something else going on with them. The tanks are usually covered so much in algae, that you pretty much have to stick your face to the glass to see anything. I have pointed out dead fish on two separate occasions. The only reason I go there now is for crickets for my son's lizards.

There is LFS Chain I go to occasionally. The tanks are horrible and the poor fish are always sick. This is for SW and FW. I find it disgraceful but they don't care. I just look and don't buy anything not even crickets. I buy them at a closer LFS. Have seen many sick reptiles also. I complained once and they sent me a gift card, big whoop. It doesn't really help the animals.
