Tank crash survivors

hah yeah if my tank was doing well i would have bought a wild colony from tropaquarium- with reeftoreptiles across the street they have 2 nice colonies of a mixx between pink lemonade and a microladus for only 80 bucks : / can you belive that its in the giant colony section for only 80 bucks : /.

We just restocked our tank after the crash with 100% aquacultured and the corals we lost were about 97% aquacultured. Events like this make the don't break the chain threads very enticing, and a good way to keep present corals in the ocean.

even if we stoped buying corals taken from the ocean i dont think the stores would stop stocking them : / so i think people buying them gives a better chance and also a better luck to discover a gem and find a nice name for :)

If EVERYONE takes less from the stores (that don't support aquaculture) then we WILL have an impact. We are who they are supplying and we need to encourage it with everyone we speak to (store owners alike). There are lots of opportunities for stores to carry aquacultured corals. We just need them to know that's what we want.

yeah veryy true- i would like to know who has the money to spend on a wild colony from expensive stores that have a slime chance of living?id liek you have your job

I am amazed as to how short a time it takes to ruin your tank, and so long to get it back.

After years of dedication to my tank, I was out of it for sometime allowed the tank to crash, and watched it decline incredibly. People used to come to my house and marvel at the colors of the tank, only thing now is cyano and bubble algae, and people no longer look at it. I lost about 90% of my coral, some colonies big in size, frag tank is empty, rock is barren again, with nothing growing on it, like I am starting from scratch. Bought fish, only to watch them die off and get all bummed out about it.

Was on the brink of breaking it down to make it a Fish Only, but was pulled back into it by Stan and have begun the swing back. Upgraded skimmer, lighting, more water changes, and normal maintenance. Watching your tank crash or decline is difficult thing to do, and it all depends on the type of person you are to see if you can pull yourself out of it and move on. It took me some time and talking to, to get to that point to start again.

It will take me months to get to the level I was at, but I take it one day at a time and long for the days of beautiful colors.

That's my story....

Jrod i know how you feel i was going to take a baseball bat to the tank if it wasn't for some members on here giving me help. Thank god my fish are still happy- if they ever died i think i would take a break. The way i see it is wih less stuff in the tank you can make those changes to the rockwork or lighting and other little things that you never could- what doesnt kill you only makes you stronger and your wallet skinnier :)

I think my 180Gal Master Disaster Build thread in tale of the tank tells it all. 3 disasters. Thousands of dollars lost in the blink of an eye. Thousands of dollars in home repair done due to salt water damages.

3 , $1500 Hardwood Floor Repairs
1 , $1200 180g Custom tank cracked
30 Coral Colonies lost from tank crack stress
Lots of fish that passed
Hundreds of hours of lost sleep
Hundreds of Gallons of gas spent delivering surviving coral colonies to reefers all over the state to house including red sand.

You guys told me not to quit. You told me to keep reefing and hell some of you have donated frags to get be back on my feet. Things are not perfect. But this is something I love. I've spent countless hours learning and now I feel confident in my pursuit of the TOTM.

Thanks Guys :)

and which stores really do support aquaculture? i don't mean the ones who just say it, i mean the ones who actually do. there aren't any.

Dr Mac. He does a lot of aquaculturing in his facility. Some of them purchase aquacultured corals and others will purchase corals from locals. I don't know of any that resell 100% aquacultured, but baby steps, right? ;D

look at all of the coral we kill. :'(

But look at all that we save..
we don't save any.
how do you figure we save coral?
if none of us were in this hobby, there would be no reason to remove coral from the ocean.
if none of us were in this hobby, all of the pollution-making, resource using, industry that goes into all of the components we need, would not be necessary.
if none of us were in this hobby, we wouldn't have to drive our cars to countless fish stores and frag swaps, using more resources, thus directly and indirectly negatively impacting the reefs and wildlife as a whole.
if none of us were in this hobby, we would save a lot of electricity and water as well, which also impacts the reefs and wildlife as a whole.

no one in this hobby is helping the reefs.

Wow, Doug, that was intense! was their VODCA involved? ;D
Well, as I do use resources, I conceder myself a Gardener, making the most of the land and sea. Most of what I have now in my tanks, and the one ones I propagate are generations from the wild. Neon Metals and Purple Dige-John9009, Motiporas, birds Nest, Candy Cane-Harlequin Reef, Spotted Shrooms, Pulsing Zenia- Chase, Keni Trees-Panamatt,
Frilly Shrooms-Bovi, Zoas, Shrooms ans Fire Weed-Mike and Nikki and my favs, Sold to me from the Club-Neon Tipped Toadstool and Leathers from when I first started out! Thats a short list. Generations of life passing thu tanks, and not being harvested from the wild, is to me, conservation. From recent tank crashes, many of the frags I have will be going back to the original tanks to repopulate them, (DISCLAIMER_at N/C)
As for using resouses, we are the Dominant Species on this planet, we just have to be responsible, From what I have read, going back to history, eating wild foods and being eaten by predators rely was F##k#d UP.
The first pic is my Current Kitchen Frag Farm, just a hobby.
The next pics started out as a weed lot and is now my organic gardens, most seed is saved for the next season, Mulch and rabbit detrus are the main fertilizers, 4-55 Gal drums under rain gutters supply the water.

I agree 100%, but I'm not ready to let this hobby go just yet. So sad that I think like this even though I have killed so much corals and 1-3 fish.

SO MUCH FOR CONSERVATION............ Honestly, I think this word should be banned from this hobby.

no problem thanks again- im waiting for everything to stop being p/o im doing waterchanges with tropic marine pro salt and super clean ro/di water so idk when this stuff will turn around. Im looking back into putting up metal halides. my corals grow super skinny at the base then grow thick at the top so when a fish swings he breaks it and it falls and die- hence why most of my frags are still frags. So if anyone is looking for a 48" t-5 fixture that has decent bulbs in it hit me up. i love the old look of the halides when they first turn on and the fan turn on reminds me of summer.
