I'm in the process of finishing my basement and I want to put a built in tank down there. I've been browsing CL for a new tank. I'd like to keep a couple of tangs in it so I'm thinking of a large tank. I've seen quite a few 7' tanks reasonably priced. Can I humanely keep some of the smaller tangs in that, or should I continue to look for an 8'?

There are people with 4' tanks that keep multiple tangs.., I think any tank over 6' you won't have a problem hosting multiple tangs..
There's a lot of us that keep the smaller tangs (Pblue, Pbrown, bristletooth, yellow etc.) in 4' tanks. usually people in the tang police say 6' is good for them.
I'f you've found a 7' tank by all means go for it! What sizes are you looking at? 84" X ??" X ??"
There's a pretty good article I found on tangs and tank sizes. The article basically try's to debunk the larger tank rule for tangs. It specifically names the hippo as a tank that really doesn't need a large tank. Anyway if I can find it I'll post it. It's a pretty quick and interesting read.
Now onto my experience. I have three in my 90. A hippo, kole, and yellow. They have plenty of swimming room and are all happy as far as I can tell. They are all around 3-4".

Everything besides the tank, stand, and maybe lights isn't worth keeping. You're better off getting a 125g tank and use it for a sump. I'd personally find something wider than 24", that isn't used. It's not worth taking the risk of over 200 gallons of saltwater on your floor. What kind of lights?
I have always had a pair in a 120 4ft and no problems...think that they do better in reef tanks then non reef too for what it is worth.
I'm interested in the tank and possibly pump, everything would dumped. Tanks always have the potential to leak, I'd fill it with fresh water and let it sit in my garage for a few weeks. I'm having a special flooring put in, so water would not be an issue, and it would be next to a drain which drains to a high powered sump. I'd rather save the money for better equipment.
