As far as TDS goes, 120 isn’t bad…but that comes with a caveat….TDS only tells you that there is stuff in your water. It doesn’t tell you what that stuff is. So stating that 120 is good or bad really can’t be stated because we don’t know what that mystery stuff is…especially when it comes to using that water in a saltwater tank. And actually, with the simply meters we use, it actually tells you that the water is conducting electricity (presence of ions in the water). This stuff is most likely calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, bicarbonates, chlorides and sulfates (and maybe some other things I can’t think of right now…oh ions from the pipes it passes through…iron, copper, lead?). The point I’m making is that TDS meters are qualitative measuring devices that actually tell us the conductivity of the water.
However, with that said, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), the Overlord or water quality standards in the USA, actually has not set a TDS standard for drinking water. However, they have stated that a TDS of 500mg/l or more produces odor, taste, staining and other problems with the water. On that note, 120 isn’t that bad. I’ve tested water that has been in the upper three hundreds. Ours (in Sayreville) is typically in the two hundreds.
An RO/DI unit will have no problem dropping that number down to zero, or very close to it.
I know a few guys who have reef tanks with much higher TDS than that and have kept all manner of corals for years with no RO units. They just use good quality detoxifiers/dechlorinators.
