Tek T5 HO vs LED Fixture

tank dimensions: 48 x 18 x 12-14

I am currently contemplating on getting a Tek T5 HO 8 bulb or MaxSpect 170W version.

Price tags:

AquaCave 419.95 + 5 bucks shipping 425

MaxSpect G2-170W 610 + 95 shipping and 5 insurance

Keep in mind the LED fixture will probably run a lot longer but definitely not as well praised for being a known performer as the T5 counterpart. I don't think this fixture is controllable but it's definitely not the price of AI fixtures etc. so i'd be happy.

The Maxspect looks good, but I have not read any testing/par readings out of the fixtures. I know the G2 is using Cree XPGs so it should be ok. I know some people on RC just ordered some fixtures, but no one has any pics up.

Don't forget abou the premium aquatics GB, they have the TEK hood there as well.

I want to make a led light soon just so much conflicting info on led lights right now.if i were u i would just wait on the leds until some solid info is up on them.also seems like every day they come out with stronger leds 2 the one u get today might be old tech in a week..lol imo

I thought the group buy said nothing over 2 feet or required any special packaging?  That's why I didn't order through there.

The Par values look pretty good versus the T5 par values they displayed.

The Par values and the height of the tank is what makes the Par values gives almost no hold on my decision.

Requesting experience for those who have made the move from T5 to LED.  differences and recommendations?


switch - that's the main reason i don't know if i want to go with LED technology as of right now.  it'll keep upgrading and the price will drop once everyone else catches on.  i would love to build my own but that much money and to end up not working properly would kill me.

Any BULB longer than two feet, you can always ask. I know people have bought fixtures through them in the past, and it is free to ask to save some money.

im going to make 1 with 10mm 4 now it seems to do more with nm specs so im going to use pink and purple/uv mixed in with the blue and whites and see what happens going to use it on a small tank and put different frags in it and see what happens .hell i see people getting away with 5mm i know but with all the ???????????? i fig.its a good starting point cost around 50-60 bucks after i order the leds worst case should be a great fuge light if nothing else? will see

switch do you have a build thread? i was looking at the prices and it would match the price for the MaxSpect fixture which looks good and would cause a lot less man power time. with the little time already dont have.

no build thread im getting ready to order some leds in a few days and will prob.take 2 weeks or so for shipping going with leds from ebay.cheap 1 with resistors already will same me time.will post info when i start i might go to raido shack to get a few to play with at shack it 2.79 i think for 2 10mm leds with out res.and a few more bucks for them.have 2 see money is tight but i have wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy 2 much free time im not working so going a lil crazy sitting home broke and thinking of a trazillion ways to spend money lol...

Id go wit the t5. Leds are so new , not perfected yet, and prob go down in price in a few years. So much controversy wit the leds , no unit thats really solid that reefers are swearin by yet

i went with the tek t5 6bulb for now. price and availability. i have plans to move to led once the price is better and more info is there.
