The Damndest Thing

We have had our African Grey parrot Casey for 18 years.

Yesterday she laid an egg for the first time. How strange is that?

We moved her cage closer to the window for the first time in a long time a few weeks back. We weren't even sure it was a girl.

Did you remove the egg?
When I sold birds and had my macaw I saw numerous non-fertile eggs laid and if they wern't removed quick enough 2 things seemed to happen.
1.The birds became overly agressive
2.Sometimes they went into believe it or not deep depresion.

We have a fem cockatiel that laid eggs a few days for a month or so and everytime she would stop eating while she sat on the egg. If you remove it the possibility exist she'll lay another, as reefs mentioned they can become aggressive if its not removed. From what we were told it is not really a good thing as egg laying is quite stressful for birds.

While laying its good to give them some vitamin supplements.

My bird days are way in the past but I used to use a viatmin called avitron and dusted the seed with bone meal.

The avitron is a good idea, we have some around, we'll put it in her water. We made her an egg (a chicken egg, you lout) and mixed up the shells in it. We used to do that for the birds every week, when we used to take better care of them.

We did remnove the egg, too, althought I didn't know the pros and cons. The only thing I could remember was that breeders do it so the birds will double clutch, but we figured who wants a stinky egg sitting around if it gets rotten?
