The Journey of my Seahorse Tank

It all started with a "clearance" price and an extra 30% off of the tank and stand. The tank is a half moon 30 gallon and the height makes it perfect for seahorses. Now, the height makes rock work a pain, so I went with a foam rock wall.

Here are some pics from the beginning:

Now some horse shots (they are erectus).

sweet where did you get the h.erectus?

plants are fake right?
I got them from seahorsesource. Yup, the plants are fake. I am going to take them out once I have enough macros for the tank or corals. I still need to upgrade the lights.
Cool they look great!!!
Thanks!

Looks great. My wife really wants a seahorse tank.
She should do it. They are pretty easy once you get familiar with their needs.

where do you get the amphipods? from the other tank? or do you buy them? for 3 sea horses - how many do you get? sounds like a treat.

I buy them online (seahorsesource or live aquaria). I just get like 30-60 once every 3 months. The horses love it.

it looks like if you go to their website - you can get a buy 1 get 1 free (1000 total) for $25...but i don't know how much shipping would cost.

That is a great sized tank for seahorses. Do you also run a chiller?

Yes, I do. I run an aqua euro 1/10.

In other news, I have noticed that my male looks like he is losing his cirri. This does not surprise since this happens a lot with captive bred horses.

:( I recently lost both my seahorses. I was struggling around December and January with both of my tanks. I think I may have had bad water, since I was really busy with work, college and the holidays I bought pre-mixed saltwater. As far as I could tell, the seahorses did not show signs of a bacterial infection or anything else. So I am redoing the seahorse tank!! This time around I am going with hybrid seahorses and the only fish with the seahorses are going to be a mandarin and a cardinal.

Sorry for your losses. I become attached to my fish, so I know the feeling.

I speak with great ignorance….it’s the one thing I’m an expert at….but I was under the impression that you want a species specific tank for sea horses. One reason is their slow eating habits, where other fish will eat the food before they have a chance. The other is temperature differences… most horses like a cooler tank.

Yes, you are correct about the eating habits of the seahorses and that seahorses do better in a cooler tank. I have to be very careful with the inhabitants that I put in the tank. The seahorses are slow, methodical eaters. You can house other fish with them but they can't be aggressive like clowns, damsels or even tangs. Many fish can adapt to the cooler seahorse tank temp. I keep my seahorse tank at 73.
