Thinking of a new tank

So, I am thinking of a small upgrade. With the $1 per gallon sale at Petco I have been thinking of going to a 40b. Now, I know what you're thinking. 40b isn't much of an upgrade over a 30g. Well, my 30g is an AIO so I am losing at least 5 gallons with the back chamber. Plus, throw in the room I will be saving with a sump and all and I figure it's almost double what I have. Anyway, I wanted to do a glass-holes overflow and I wanted to know what you guys thought. Would the 700gph be OK? 700 seems like it's just barely enough but 1500gph seems like way too much. So, what does everyone think?

700 is plenty IMO Jonathan. I use a Eshopps 350 on my 40B and its OK, but then I'm tied into the the big system.

Glass-Holes rules!

The 700 is more then enough for a 40B. :You should be just fine. They are, without question, the only way to do an overflow. The best.

Sounds like a great plan….go for it!

I have a 700 on the 65 and I'm going to order another 700 for my 40B. Get the 40B and the 700 kit and we can have a tank drilling party! ;D

I'm going this week to get my 20L sumps. $1/gallon rules! :D

OR you could save the cash on the kit and just buy 2 bulkheads, get the glass at lowes and we could put it together in my shop then spend the rest on some frags at "the garage" in Freehold ;D

Thanks all! So it sounds like I have my plan! Was also thinking of a 20L for the sump too. Maybe even a 29 for a bit of extra depth but I will have to look at stand heights before I make that decision. A tank drilling party would be awesome Brian! Maybe a bit complicated since the tank you want to drill is already set up though.....

That sounds like a very tempting idea Tony!! BUT for only $79 I am sure there will be enough left over for a visit to this garage. I want to get the tank and all now because of the sale but I think it will be a little while before I get all the pumps and everything else I will need. With my 30g nano it was all just kind of "throw it all together." I want to do this one right, or at least better.

Thanks again to everyone for all your help!

Sounds like you have a story similar to my 65 in the making. LoL Slow and steady!

I would get a 29 but with the AGA stands it would not leave me with much room between the top of the sump and the stand. The 20L would make it easier to work inside the sump. If you build your own stand, you could make the stand taller to work with the 29 and also raise the 40B up for a better view of the tank.

There have been some job related change of plans with my future house purchase. I'll be in my apt. for another year so the plan is to put the 65 where the 40B is now and move the 40B to the living room. While the tank is drained to move it, I will drill the 40B for the G-H 700 overflow. ;D

That's what I'm thinking, although I may get impatient!

If you end up deciding to use a 20L as a sump, I've got one you can have. It's taking up space here.

Very tempting Picasso! Is it already set up as a sump? You're down in South Jersey right? Will you be at the next meeting?

It's just the tank. It's not drilled or divided at all. I am in South Jersey & am planning to be at the Meeting on the 16th.

That's where I am at right now, I'm so close to finishing it, I want to finally get some water in it!

I would rather it without the baffles and all in it. Olivier has offered a 20 that he has. If it is a 20l I will get it from him since he is a 30 second drive from my house. I will let you know well before the next meeting what the deal is. Thanks a lot for you offer!

Well, it seems that, thanks to Bax, I may be moving up to a 50b instead of the 40. Thanks also to Olivier for the sump tank and build offer!

nothing built yet. don't thank me. Yon might waste your words on me. When will you want to come to my house and check on the spare 20L tank?

Well, I got the 20l tank for the sump from Olivier! Once I get the tank from Mr. Bax, I will be well on my way to the mini-upgrade. Still considering lights for it. The center brace complicates things a little though. One MH pendant seems like it would cast a shadow. Then again, we noticed that with Fengs LEDs that CJ has, they don't cast a shadow from the brace so I may go that way too. Any ideas/suggestions? Also thinking about a pump too. Would a Mag 12 (1200 gph) be strong enough?

Ohh man... The 50 has the same stupid brace that my 65 has? 40 = no brace. ;)

I had the same problem to consider with the 65 about casting a shadow. The T-5 fixture had no visible shadow and most 36" MH fixtures these days have a single bulb in the middle and I can only imagine it would block a lot of light. ::) When I saw the dual 150W 36" fixture with T-5s instead of PCs for sale, I was all over it! I was going to do dual AI LED pendants but I don't have a grand just kicking around. :-\. If my LED PC retro works out, I might swap out the MHs in the fixture for two DIY LED arrays. ;D

300 watts of halides plus 156 watts of t-5s should be enough light. 8) For now...
