This could end badly

I have been following this on the reptile side for awhile and it ridiculous how naive these politicians are. I know the fish side will be impacted. They don't realize all the progress we novice's have made in captive breeding with reptiles and fish.

I guess this will turn into NJGOLDFISH.org LOL.

But on a serious note, I know they have passed a couple of laws banning Larg pythons so its turning into a trickle affect. The real problem is dumb people releasing thier animals into the wild. Thats why these bills are even coming up. The only ones they realy talk about is the MONSTER SNAKES OF THE EVERGLADES, but there are even bigger problems that don't come up as often. Like the cichlids that dig away at the banks destroying the marshes and the nutria rats that are also digging up the grass floats and digging away at the banks turning marshes into swampy lakes. Another big problem is the lionfish in florida. Reports say since they have no natural preditors down there and there appitite is so big that they are wiping out entire ecosystems. There are places now where the only thing you will see is lionfish.

I could go on and on about this but in actuallity I half support not importing certain animals as it may become a much larger problem in the future.

Ugh. If this was an effort to protect the species they're trying to lock out, I'd understand. But it seems their just afraid that these creatures will harm us?

I've seen some cats and dogs that are more dangerous to us than fish and reptiles. Granted, some snakes and venomous/poisonous critters are a concern but for the most part this is ridiculous.

I think they should at least allow experienced breeders to continue importing to keep the industry going. Maybe require a license or something to be able to do it?

I agree cats and dogs do a lot of damage. I think there was a article that said cats kill hundreds of millions of birds a year in this country alone.

But you also have to think of it this way. If they tighten the importation of some animals it will most likely lead to more tank bred speciments. Why try to breed something if its easier to just rip it out of its natural enviroment(why are clownfish still being wild caught). From what I gathered from talking to the owner of a LFS, he said the reason some things are so expensive is that if the ship poorly the price increases. example: You pay for said number of fish to be shipped but only a percentage make it, they just spread the loss to the price of the other fish to make up for it. Thats alot of collateral damage on any species.

I agree with all of that. However, only a very limited number of specimens have been successfully tank bred. If they put a stop on importing, whatever isn't already here will never have a chance to be successfully tank bred.

That's why I said they need to allow at least some importation via licenses or permits or whatever. Again, there should be some degree of experience, ample facilities to raise the specimens, and clear intent that it's for tank breeding purposes.

That would give us hobbyists some hope that we'll still be able to keep some of the critters we may already have.
