Those with Jawfish..

My jawfish thought all was well and peacefull today until I added a few colored beads to the tank in an area between their homes . It was an all out scramble to see who would score the best . After a while they each decided the others were nicer and the back and forth stealing began . They have been at it now for about three hours, once one turns its back the others go for the goods.
It should be fun to see what happens at lights out, whoever goes to sleep first will be leaving his front yard with all his treasures up for grabs.
Jawfish have to be one of the best fish to watch and when they finally get boring all you have to do is add something new and watch them go at it .

Pearlies . I had a mated pair and lost the female . I added a new one yesterday and it is now living in the same hole as the original male, hope it pairs up . I really want a pair of blue spots but will wait until the new system which will have a cover . I've picked too many blue spots off the floor already  .
I am contemplating a new system a Marineland Deep I plan to do islands of rockwork and lots of open space for jawfish . I want at least 10 of them with a mix of pearlies and blue spots . I also want to do a bunch of anemones and clown fish . I would love to get a hatch from someone and raise a bunch together .But a few pairs of different clowns and anemones would also be nice . Time will tell, I am sick of my system as of now and need a change .

Not really sure on the sexing . I do know the male will carry the eggs in his mouth after spawn . I read on a site that a males mouth is wider and deeper cut than a female to allow this . I cannot tell the difference by looking at them .
When I bought the last two they were hanging out together in the stores tank so I figured maybe they would work . Once added to the tank they split and one did go live with my original male so I am hoping its a female . I do know my male is huge compared to the others I have seen, not sure if this is a sex id .
I like them so much that I have no problem adding as many as it takes. ;D

Ive wanted to get some jawfish too,but was worried when I heard they were jumpers.I have a canopy with mh's and vho's.wondering if thats enough to keep them in,or are we talking a screen mesh type of cover.Good luck with yr pair, would be kewl to see em mate

Not sure, qwik, correct me if I'm wrong, but once the jawfish settle into your tank and make a burrow, the odds of them jumping a very small.

Jawfish are jumpers make no doubt about it (especially the blue spots). We just bought a second blue spot, after our first one went carpet surfing. If your canopy has no holes in it you should be fine, but just be careful.

They are jumpers . Law of economics makes the blue jaw more prone to jumping .
Once they do dig in they are less likely going to jump but I had a blue jaw that was dug in for a week and then dedcided to juump . I blame it on lunar lights myself . Whenever I have had one jump the lunar lights have been on . I no longer turn the lights on and have had no jumpers. This goes for clowns also . I cant prove its the lights that attract them out of the tank but I will keep them off until my tabk is fully covered .

We got our jawfish on saturday and he was burrowed in nicely. Tonight we were watching TV and heard him try to jump then saw him try and jump. Thank god for the jawfish blocker 5000 or he would have been another carpet surfer. Little bugger can generate quite the bit of force. He is now settling into another burrow dead front center of our tank which is nice.

Supra thanks for the read .
I didn't know the Jawfish Blocker 5000 was on the market yet,I thought it was still in testing .

It is still in testing and is top secret. If big fish gets notice of this they will sneak into my house and shatter it and then tease my jawfish into jumping. Essentially it is eggcrate cut to cover the whole tank (even around the pumps) with fiberglass screen attatched to the top. A pic for you:

Considering we are running a 250w MH pendant on a 30g tank, losing some light is probably a good thing. Honestly not that much light is lost. No shadows are cast at all, it just looks a bit dimmer, but all the corlas (SPS included) are still fine. I would be curious to see what type of effect they would have on T5s, but that is for another day.

jawfishblocker 5000. Will the 6000 model be out soon? ;D

anyways - you could press your luck like me - I have a pair of pearlies and a firefish in an open top for the past year. Maybe the threadfin cardinalfish (my dither fish) make them feel safe? I dunno.
