Thoughts on a 30 cube

Well I picked this up today to use as a sump or frag tank.

I hope it fits in the stand. LOL

I didn't measure the height but it looks to be 72x18x18 which would make it 100 gallons. There's not a scratch on it, almost to good to be used for a sump. For $100 I didn't really care what size it was.

Now I'm on the hunt for a bargain 180 and I'll have all of the tanks I want for my future basement sump room.

The diatoms have died off in the cube and have been replaced by a nice carpet of hair algae.

Next week I'll add a bunch of live copepods and mysid shrimp and let them do their thing for a month or so.

In the meantime I need finish the canopy and doors for the stand and I should be ready for the first couple of test corals.

The clowns and LTA are being fostered at Radiata's house until the tank is good and ready. I'll see how well some coral fairs before I add them.

You are about to lose the title of awesome reefer without a tank, LOL.

I finally tracked down some snails to work on my new 30 gallon algae turf farm, LOL. I had to drive to OGII to get them which was way out of my way. But I picked a 4 polyp frag of Darth Maul zoas for $25 so that made me feel a little better.

I'll give the 5 mexican turbos and 10 Astreas some time to mow down the HA before I start to really stock the tank.

I need to get my skimmer running as well. It's an old counter current skimmer with a lime wood air stone but it should work just fine for this tank and it takes up very little room in the stand. The only thing I don't like is the collection cup. It's just a bad design, the cup is not designed to hold and skimmate but rather push the skimmate through a drain at the top of cup. So I'm on the search for 6" - 1' piece of acrylic tube or clear PVC. But all of the places I checked so far will only sell 5' lengths.

I glued up the doors and hood for the canopy this week so I'll try and finish it up this weekend if I have time.

What diameter tube? Trop sells by the foot if you want to really take a drive. Or if I can get to it I can bring it up the meeting on the 22nd. Shoot me a pm.

Mcmaster Carr sells up to 8" clear cast acrylic by the foot in various wall thickness. You can also check MSC or Grainger.

Alright you guys made get off the couch and take some shots with my little point and shoot.

I still haven't got the skimmer hooked up yet or finshed the stand and canopy. I guess I'll get to that when work slows down.

I should give Blange a shout out for all the coral he lent me. I can't wait to grow them out and give them back when he sets up his next reef tank. (hint hint) LOL

Anyway here's the pics....
