Thoughts ?

There is no reason to keep the alk @8dkh or any specific number. You can do as many water changes as you want the parameter will just settle down to whatever the salt mixed at and it will be stable.

If you do not have SPS I wouldn't measure the water at all except salinity.
Post your tank !

Agreed. Kinda. I run my tank around 8dkh. I'm not super interested in doing water changes with a salt that strays too far from that number
Any suggestions on what salt mixes are close to the 8dkh? I am honestly nervous about doing water changes with my RC once I saw the pattern of alk spike and die off. It would explain why i have not been able to keep anything in almost a year (well besides my BTA). I havent done a water change in over a month our of caution and my new blastos seem to be doing very well. Although it may just be coincidental...i am going to continue down the path of alk stability until i have a reason not too.

This thread and Dongs video just solidifies for me why this hobby can be so difficult. What works is not set in stone. When someone posts “I have a problem” first thing asked is what are your parameters. Then it’s hey raise or lower this or that. But it might or might not help. People are successful or not at a variety of parameter levels. I had cyano recently. Everyone says increase flow. BS. I invite the entire Njreefers forum to my house to watch my pumps blow my sand around while the cyano flitters in the flow. Every tank has to be taken individually and you have to keep trying and work through problems.

This hobby keeps evolving . We keep having a better understanding of what keeps these corals alive. Keeping things as simple as possible is key.

coral death is part of the hobby. i Don’t change anything because a coral died.

This is why I like the hobby. It's hard, and then even once you figure out the basics, it's still hard. It's similar to cooking in many ways. I might go to someone's house and say oh wow this tank is excellent, what are you running your nutrients at, what kind of lights ect ect. I then file that info into my brain. I don't go home and change everything. (Sometimes I might)

The SAME story applies to going over to someone's house and eating a fish instead of looking at one. They might cook something a way you've never thought of. Both recipes are good, and often one isn't better than another. But again, like the aquarium, sometimes one will be better and sometimes we change our minds. Healthy humans should be changing their opinions from time to time.

I. Agree with your post. The biggest problem I see in this hobby is companies selling bad products. Products with very high prices but no premium.
if I test my salt right now I would get different readings from all devises and that a huge problem.

you spend 1k on reef lights and the programs do work.
