I lost two panda gobies to a fire shrimp. I have also lost small gobies (under 2") to crabs, emerald, halloween hermit, mexican red tip hermit, and a nasty hitchhiker. I lost a fire fish to a pistol shrimp (a live rock hitchiker, not one paired with a goby), and I lost a fire fish to a mantis shrimp hitchhiker. I do currently have a porcelain crab that takes swipes at fish, and sometimes gets fins, but he is huge, almost 2", and I would not call that the norm.
I have not had any problem with cleaner shrimp, sexy shrimp, tiger pistols, candy pistols, blue leg hermits, serpent stars, linkia, pom pom crabs, or strawberry crabs.
I have done fine so long as the gobies have been 1" or larger. I have kept trimma, evicta, and flaming prawn gobies under 1" without incident in tanks with tiger pistols and candy pistols without incident. I currently have a fire shrimp in our 12g, and he, our magnificent goby (paired with a tiger pistol), my trimma goby, my red headed goby, and my cleaner goby are all interacting just fine.
In our big tank, our pair of magnificent gobies live with a candy pistol, and we have a yasha, and a cleaner goby in the tank along with the aforementioned porcelain crab, two serpent stars, lots of hermits, a red linkia, 2 cleaner shrimp, a fire shrimp, and two strawberry crabs.
Well my concerns are mainly a Large Peppermint shrimp and my 2 porcelain crabs. I was debating on getting a bunch of neon goby's. I have a YWG/pistol pair on the bottom and there is no movement up high(if there's a 2nd fish its another ywg that's on the opposite side of the tank). I'm not overly concerned with the pistol as its a candycane so its fairly small itself.
Cleaner gobies are good, and I hate to be the one to say this but look for Sustainable Aquatics. The ORA ones I have seen recently have been a bit funky looking. Also, if you do more than one make sure you are getting a true pair or they can fight. Maybe try a (blue neon) cleaner, a sharknose (blue and gold neon hybrid), and a (gold neon) cleaner.
I also like redheaded gobies, green banded gobies, hector's, high fin, trimma, yasha, eviota, and wheeler's personally. At one time or another, I have kept all of them.
If you are not thinking about SPS, try clown gobies, just avoid the little panda gobies.
I would not worry too much about the peppermint shrimp, and as I said I have only had one porcelain crab that has been less than peaceful.
I also love barnacle blennies, I have a colony in our big tank. I think they are interesting fish to watch in a group.
One of the great things about the little gobies is how cool it can be to watch them interact.
I didn't know neon gobies would fight like that.I was hoping that I could get a bunch of them so much for that thought. Other than barnicle blennies is there any other nano fish that I could try? I've tried clown gobies a couple of times with no luck. They always seem to starve out
So one of the most important things to keep in mind with small gobies is that they need small food. We use Rod's food, it has small pieces. We also feed arctipods, and we have a pod culture running. A lot of small gobies will feed on the microfauna in your tank as well. I have had trouble getting small gobies to eat pellets and flake, but they will take arcipods and cyclopsees.
Yasha gobies need to be kept in pairs, or they fight. They are sexually dimorphus, which makes it a bit easier.
I have never attempted to keep more than one red headed goby at a time, but they get to a nice size for a Nano.
I have not had any problem with trimmas or eviotas, but I am usually getting them one at a time due to the infrequnecy with which they are available.
