To sock or not to sock?

I started with felt and although I liked the filtration provided, cleaning them was a hassle.

Then I switched to the mesh and cleaning them is really simple.

Does this feel like Deja Vu for you also Jim?

I was going to make the move but decided against it because of the hassel of cleaning. Maybe in the future I will.

I use felt and like them ( buffs the water).. I don't even bother turning them inside out to wash.. just add bleach to wash with a double rinse, hang dry and it's good to go.. That's my sunday nights

Well, since this one is up top I will let mine die.

Thanks for your advice in my thread everyone. Even though I bought a sock holder today..... I'm just not the handy type and I don't want to add anything else to Brian's list of things to build for me. ;)

How often do you guys clean your filter socks? Weekly?

I switch mine out every weekend and clean the dirty one... so yea once per week for me.

I plan on starting biopellets soon though, so that may impact how often I need to switch them out.

I'm like the others, started without them for the first few years, but I've been using them for a while and they do collect a good amount of junk. I use the 4"x8" felt 100 micron ones and change them every 3 - 5 days. I just throw them in a bucket with a 50/50 bleach/water mixture for a day or two. It seams to work and I feel better knowing that anything I stir up gets removed.

I opted out of using socks because
1) not sure if I clean them enouph (some dirt still stays in felt socks) , especially bleach. Did not want to risk adding even small amounts of bleach to tank.
2) stuff that sock catches could become the food something in the tank. I don't overfeed.

When I did use socks, I used hydrogen peroxide to clean them. Works almost as good as bleach, but w/o the worry of rinsing well.

Boy your an exciting date.:glee:
I use 4x10 felt 100 micron about once a week ...wash twice hot water no bleach.

My experience with socks looks a little different than most others here. I like using them - it helps keep down splashing/spray in the sump and does a good job catching food and junk. I started with felt but have switched to 100 micron mesh. I was changing them about every 4 days. I started dosing vinegar a few months ago which causes bacteria to build up in the sock, so now I change them every 2-3 days. I don't have a problem with that, and cleaning is easy since the sump is in the basement with a slop sink a few feet away. I usually rinse them out then let them soak in a bucket with a tiny bit of bleach, then rinse again and air dry.

I use the felt ones, definitly collects alot of stuff, I run a bare bottom and once every day or two I stick my scrub brush in there and mix up anything laying in there. stick them in the washer with a little bleach wash on hot and thankfully my washer has the steam option so I steam them and they are as white and clean as the day I bought themI change them out every three to five days.

I use the felt socks and actually like the way they polish the water.Every 3-4 days I change them out and just throw them in the washer with some bleach- let the cycles go and air dry....good to go.Sometimes I turn em inside out and give them a second wash if I fed heavily while using that pair.
