Toadstool coral not opening

Btw. I really like the new test kit. Very easy to read. Although the api kit I have is pretty much spot on, I like the and ease of use of the nyos kit better. Any experience with there phosphate test kit? I’m not crazy about my Seachem phosphate kit.

IMO, there isn't a real bullet proof phosphate test kit out there....but that's me. For that reason, I've really stayed away from those test kits. You could give it a shot though but I cant offer any input on it.

Yea. A lot of people like Hanna ultra low range, but I was looking for a more economical option. I’ll probably go for the Hanna eventually. I have a good enough idea, to know that my po4 is too high right now around 0.2 give or take a little.

David, is the rock to the left of that leather able to be moved a tiny bit to give space? I'm sorry just saw the pic. That's an easy small change thats worth a shot give it an extra inch or two of space to spread out and open up.

I have had it happen to my leathers occasionally. Usually bounce back soon enough.

No. It’s not extending any polyps. It’s gotten a little smaller. It’s not showing any signs of improvement. I’ve had it do this for a few days, to a week and bounce right back, but it’s been too long.

The rest of my coral are looking better over the last couple days. I have my salinity, alkalinity, calcium in check. All my parameters are hovering around the ideal levels, except phosphates, which are a tad high, but not out of control. A leather, shouldn’t care about slightly high Po4. My montipora is happy, and if Po4 was really a problem, that would probably be the more sensitive.

The toadstool still isn’t opening. I have gotten my po4 down to .05 now. Unfortunately my No3 has dipped below 3 ppm. I have removed about 20% of the BioPellets from the reactor to try to edge them back up. The rest of my coral, soft, lps, and the single sps (monti) look decent. The toadstool is the only problem. This is how it use to look. It does not seeem to be waiting away. It has shrunk a little though.

The same as the picture I sent on the 2nd, when I started this thread. I’m not home to take a current picture, but I sent one then, and not much has changed.

Don't they go through a process where they shrink and shed their outer skin? Through this process they may remain closed for several days but when they reopen they are bigger and more nicer looking than before

If you have a mixed reef with soft corals you should always run carbon. That way it can remove toxins. Toadstool need good flow.

Amazing for like 7-10 days out of the month. The rest of the time it looks like poop.

Thanks. This toadstool has not opened in 5 or 6 weeks. I run carbon in a reactor. I have it in the same spot with the same flow, for a while. It use to be happy there. I just moved it to another moderate flow spot.

I would assume something is bothering it. Does the base look well? Any dark spots or abrasions?
Any fish picking at it or resting in it? My devil hands closes when the hawkfish sits in it.

Not that I can see. My clowns hang around it. But they don’t host in it. There was a baby snail on it one night, but I never saw it on it again. I assume it was just passing through. It doesn’t seem to live there , or lay eggs there.

Last effort, I’ll try it on the bottom, low light area. It’s definitely loosing some mass now. I have low nitrates of 1 ppm, that I’m trying to bring up a little. I just removed some more pellets from my bio pellet reactor. The rest of my parameters are pretty good. This coral used to do fine in my tank under direct lighting. I don’t know what caused it to go down hill. I haven’t added any livestock to the tank recently.

Toadstools are weird. Sometimes they just shutdown for a while. I guess you have to just wait and see.
