Totally confused on pluming

Hi all I am planing an upgrade from a 75 to a 180. All the tanks that I have had have been single return with a sump/Refugium directly under the tank. The new 180 will be dual return and I plan on having the equipment in a separate room.

Now my confusion. I would like to split the return one direct to the tank the other to a fuge a RDSB and a future frag tank and reactors. So how do I plumb the the fuge and rdsb and frag tank back to the DT. Do they all feed back into the other return line.

I would love to see diagrams or pictures of similar setups. Any and all help is appreciated and needed.

Thanks Dan

I'm not really following your description, but I would have all the Water from the DT Gravity feed to the other items, an then a return from the sump to the DT. The other option maybe feed all the other items with a separate pump gravity feed back to the sump.

I would plumb them back with a gravity drain to your sump and pump from there back to the display. If you try to use a separate pump from your fuge / rdsb / frag tank it would have to equal the flow into that series of tanks.... not an easy task. You'd end up with then overflowing or a net water loss.

I'm assuming that your sump, fuge, and DSB will sit lower then your DT. If that's the case then just have 1 overflow go straight to the skimmer section of your sump. Take the 2nd overflow and split it with a T and ball valve. Have the ball valve on the line that runs to your fuge/DSB and just close it up a bit to lower the flow to that section. All the rest of the water will be directed to the skimmer section unchecked. As far as the frag tank goes I assume that will sit a bit higher and will not be able to be gravity fed. If that is the case then just use a manifold off of the return pump to feed that as well as the DT and reactors if included. Have the frag tank gravity feed back to the skimmer section and reactor output will go into the return section of the sump.

Thanks all for the response Let me attach a picture of what I was thinking for clarity. But here was my confusion if I dump the fuge and dsb into the sump does any of the benefits like pods make there way into the DT

Sorry can't attach photo from phone so let me try to explain.

I have a 6'x2' closer net to my DT that I wish to use for equipment.

I was thinking the sump would be on the floor and I would build a stand on top that would hold frag tank fuge and rdsb

I would pump up about 36" to the stand then across and out to DT.

I was thinking that u need to have at least the fuge and rdsb drain into a line that fed the DT because in my mind the pods and other beneficial organisms would need to make it back into DT.

Again in my mind the frag fuge and rdsb dumping back into the sump never allow that water to completely enter DT

I will try a picture again later.

Water is not static or serial in nature, so it will turn over just due to the fact it will mix. Same concept as a skimmer, not all your return water is going through the skimmer, but over time all parts will get skimmed.
