Transfer switch installation.

With winter approaching, I am thinking of installing a transfer switch so I can use my generator in case we lose power Does anyone know if I need to get permit for this?

I am located in East Brunswick.

Thanks.

I installed one at my bosses house last year. As far as I know you don't need a permit

Most towns require a licensed electrician.....and a good number require inspection. I know Sayreville requires inspection/permit.

You do need to get a permit. I just had an electrician over regarding a whole house backup and we talked about this cheaper option. One of the main issues is the plug must be outside and 5feet from a door or window. This to keep carbon monoxide away from the home.

They are easy to install. Here is a nice one and they have a nice U tube instruction video.

Will cover most needs in a home except central air. Will run well pumps.

You are not going to believe this. I woke up to a loud bang 3am today and the power was out. It was finally restored around 10:30am. I shut the valves to my sump (in basement) and fire up my generator around 5am to keep the tank running.

I am going to the permit office in my township today to inquire detail.....

Thanks to all.

I did that too. While the generator cost wasn't bad, what deter me from doing it was the cost for installation. I got crazy quote from contractors and one of them was from Lowes. I am not sure if it has anything to do with the fact that I got the quotes after Sandy. Do you mind PM me the quote you got for install? I was looking at the Kohler's 14K unit with auto transfer switch for the whole house.

Depends on fuel type (propane/nat gas). I have no natural gas line and rely on propane as my fuel. Kohler is a durable model but it is more of a fuel hog with regards to propane. I have a 20 kW Honeywell whole house/ auto transfer set up. I went with a 20 kW vs a 10 kW because at resting or 1/2 load the 20 kW uses less propane per hour than the 10 kW at max. When our power is out ( happens 2-3 times a year), I'm not usually home. For the times I have been home for an outage, it runs like a commercial. Big cost to install, yes. But savings in freezer, refrigerator, packing up for hotel with wife and kids or staying put to camp with non-campers...priceless!;)

I got a 10k GE unit....found a local guy to install did a great job with some real SOB inspectors. Was a little over 2k which was well below other quotes I got.

I am assuming $2k is for installation. What did it include? Permit, auto transfer switch, gas line rerouting?? Where did you get your generator? Please let me know. Thanks.

If you see this video, (its the smaller 6 circuit unit, but essentially the same as the 10 circuit) you will see how easy it is to install. Taking your time it should only take a few hours and save you up 2k.

That's the exact one I installed. It was very easy.

Its best to pay an electrician and have it done right. Also, permits are good and cost maybe $25-$75 and you will have the assurance that what you or and outside electrician did was correct or not.

Thanks for the video, very helpful. If the installation price for the whole house is around $2K as stated by JRWOHLER, I will entertain it.
