I had my switch/panel installed for 600 bucks.....
Post sandy was the rip off time, i got quotes that were pathetic. Having said that I had ours installed in August, 20Kw Natural Gas, with auto transfer switch and 3 load shedding modules. Everything together cost me 9300. I did get some quotes in the 9s, some in the 10s and then a crazy one in the 15k range.
Yes, the quotes I got range from $12K to $15K..........
Your price is actually decent considering the 20K unit cost around $4k at the min. Care to share who did it for ya?

Sure thing Superior Electrical Contractors. No muss no fuss, signed a contract and everything was done for me, no running around. Part of the install was a load test, tank on, both AC units, kids playing xbox, 40% load. Perfect amount of head room so now i can suggest we double the tank size to match the generator, think the wife will go for it?

I had my Generac 20kW installed this Summer.. with permits for plubming, electrical, building construction (yes we need this to in my township), transfer switch (200 amp), all plubming, surge protectors and etc. for $8900. If any one wants their number.. let me know. They will cut you a better deal if you haggle. Again.. if you go with a less wattage generators.. you might save few hundreads to few thounsands. I have a big house with two central A/C and heater units. So I wanted enough juice to power both the units. One of my neighbor had a family friend that installed the same generator for $8300.. so now you have an idea as to what it would cost for labor. The 20kW units go for around $4500 the rest is labor for plumber and electrical.
Additionally, what for some shady guys that charge you extra money if they need to be there during the inspector's visit and/or if they need to modify some stuff if the inspector didn't like it. DO NOT PAY THE FULL AMOUNT until you have all your permits approved. I had no problems as my guys were local and knew the rules and guidelines for my township.

I have the GE 10K with whole house monitor...basically a smaller unit that has the "smart" transfer switch. My house is not big and I have nat gas heating, and a newer super efficient furnace/AC. Unit was about 2500, install 2200 and permits another 300 so about 5K total that was just about two years ago. The guy who did mine is local in Monmouth and likes to install generators so he does them at a nice cost, "better outside then in an attic" his words.
