Transferring Files

I just picked up a new computer and would like to transfer the files (pictures and documents), from the old to the new. What’s the easiest way of doing that? Can I simply attach a cable from one to the other, or do I need software or knowledge? Obviously, I don’t have the knowledge!

I think the old one is Windows XP and the new one is Windows 8.

Probably a USB cable or better yet a memory stick.

Depends on how much you have to transfer. Best way is to pull the old drive out of the comp. and hook it up as a slave drive then just pull the info off.

I vote for the memory stick as well, by far the easiest and cheapest solution.

If they are on the same network you can share your c: drive on the XP machine then go to you new machine and from the comand prompt type \\name of old computer\c$

It should open a window showing the files then it's a matter of drag and drop to your new machine. If that doesn't work out for you I have a cable that will allow you to slave the old drive through a standard USB port.

depends on the size of the files you want. anything small, about 32bg or less, can be transferred to a flash drive from the old computer and then you can transfer the files from the flash drive to the new computer.

Depending on the size...sign up for a free dropbox account. Put everything into your dropbox and then install dropbox on the new computer...bam everything is there amd you can either leave it in the cloud or download all the files onto the new computer

If yhe files are too large for the dropbox use an external harddrive or usb flash drive

Or just use the Windows Migration Utility... It's a seldom used program that comes with Windows from XP on up.

Connect both computers to the network. Start it on the new machine, it will give you a code to type into the old machine, start it on the old one and you are done!

Depending on amount of data a LAN connection is best or use a crossover cable (i have one if you need it) to connect the two computers.

yes - that EZ Transfer Wizard would work.

normally, most people saved their files right off their desktop, or my-documents (ie. my music, , my pics... etc)
it is a good idea but making it very difficult to do a proper backup/archives ALL your data at one shot....
especially when you have multiple users with the same PC.. it it making it ever harder!

if anyone got more interest on this backup/archive topic, (how to organized for easy backup, which type of backup to use (USB drive, NAS drive, Raid-0, Raid-1 configurations...etc.)
please say so...
may be we can start a new post to talk more in details...

Wow pretty cool didn't know that. Thanks, BTW how does the transfer work as far as directories? Does it put all the files in one new segregated area?
