Tried running no GFO

So since day one I been using the BRS GFO and carbon dual reactor. I been ordering the 1lb container because I have read some people run find with no GFO so I was testing it out. Now I kept buying the 1lb container and it would last me about 3 months before I need to order more. Was getting sick of ordering it so quickly (didn't think of ordering larger container cause I was debating of going bio pallets). That on my last order I decided to let it run out. I ran old GFO an extra two weeks with no ill affect to my tank. I knew I needed to clean the reactor (container was hard to see inside) so I decided to soak the inside container with a vinegar/water mixture; which cleaned it well. Why that was soaking I left the GFO outside container empty but still ran the carbon in the second container. I just took a look at my tank last night and it looks like my red digi might be getting affected by this change. Now I did plan on keeping on top of testing but life got in the way so I did not test like I wanted to. The issue I see is I noticed that there isn't as much polyps on it as there were before. When I used to look at it the frag was full of polyps given it a nice red color. Now its still red but I can see the stream a little between the polyps. Not sure if this is just growth or an ill affect. I am working on a water change now (as I am due for one) and just ordered 1gal container of the GFO (that should last me a year).

Did you test your tank before and after to see what's what? Sounds like you may have more nutrients in your tank than you realized.

I mean for me I was using rowaphos for years with my other tank but it became a money pit...... so i just stopped one day. My tank went nuts w gha and what not afterwards, so it made it seem like it was acting as a band aid and not really fixing my problem

I have not used gfo since....but have just upped the maintenance.

You can try phosguard from seachem as a gfo alternative

@trio91 I meant to test before and during but life got in the way. I tested before doing a water change and compared it to my last recorded test (4 weeks ago). I was thinking my numbers were going to be all over

10/9/2016:
Salt - 1.026
pH - 8.1
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate 30
Cal - 445
Alk - 8.4
Phos - 0.10
Mag - 1425

11/6/2016:
Salt - 1.026
pH - 8.0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 40
Cal - 400
Alk - 6.3
Phos - 0.25
Mag - 1440

I am thinking the drop in alk and the raise in mag is where my problem is.

Now beside my Red Digi looking odd everything else is doing fine.

I switched to biopellets around two months ago. I have to say they have been amazing my nitrates were sky high and they have been steadily decreasing. I was at 140ppm on my api test and now I'm under 40ppm and still going. the phosphates were checked here and there by the lfs told they were a little high (bought test kit after reactor) with the gfo but after installing the pellet reactor I stopped using gfo and now phosphates are .03 on my salifert test kit. all algae cyno ect.. has disappeared and you can see my corals finally flourishing.
