Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
The manfrotto's are heavy, but they don't wobble at all and I trusted it with high end film cameras and all of my film cameras. (get a head separate from the base that fits what you need to use it for)
I have been using it for about 11 years, including some abuse when I worked at the newspaper. They make a nice tripod. I think they now make some lighter weight cheap ones for entry level too. Gitzo also makes a nice tripod.
Just stay away from slik and sunpak unless you want something cheaper.
I would say yes to the quick release. It is a lot better when you want to take it off the tripod for a shot and safer to have. (don't want to cross thread anything) A good panhead is nice for doing video. The ball heads are more suited to photo with a lighter weight camera.
