Oh and also is a kalk reactor really worth getting and then tieing it into the top off water? I really dont know that much about them or how they work are they a pain to maintain or anything?

IMO, I would go with Kalk reactor before a Calcium reactor which seems to be the opposite of conventional thinking.

+1 I'm with you on this one John. ;)

But the Kalk reactor will do that as well, without dropping your PH.

Ya know, of all the DIY projects, I think this is one that is actually feasible. The key is that it is never under any pressure which makes it a whole lot easier. That being said, I've wasted WAY too much money on DIY attempts. If it were me, I'd just buy one . . . as a matter of fact, that's just what I did!

The way a lot of people have it set up is with 2 timers (or 1 AquaController). You have one timer turn the mixing pump on and off and the other control the auto top off pump. Set it so that the mixing pump turns on for about 5 minutes and then turns off. Leave it off for about an hour or so before you turn on the ATO pump. Then leave the ATO pump on for as long as you want. Turn it off and turn the mix pump back on for 5 minutes. Turn if off, wait an hour and then turn the ATO pump back on.

Any way you could post some kind of diagram of your refugiem? im gonna make one out of a 55 gallon tank and need to know where to put my baffles.

LOL! You're welcome! Be sure to post pics when your setup gets there, though, because it just sort of happens one piece at a time . . .

first of all, your set up is amazing. i am going to copy your set up as soon as i hit the lotto or get divorce (which is pretty much the same thing- just kidding).

one question, i have my kalk reactor set up in same exact way as yours, but i dont have nearly as much kalk in mine. do my eyes decieve me, or is the kalk level up above the pump in this pic?

i have about 2 inches of kalk in mine, should have more? i mean my calcium levels stay about 380-420.

btw, i use two timers for my ATO/Kalk reactor- ATO for my sump runs 4am-12am, circulating pump in my kalk reactor run 1am-2am. i really wanna get another ATO for my RODI reservoir, maybe for christmas from my wife.

Your amount of Kalk is propably fine, especially if your numbers are consistant (that's what it's all about, right?!).

Our Kalk reactor is lower now, but the Aqualifter is actually up on the shelf with the power strips.

The soloniod valve, placed BEFORE the Kalk reactor (on the freshwater/feed side of the reactor) prevents back siphoning in either direction.

The kalk level isn't as high as it looks in the pics. It was probably settling after circulating. I normally keep 2-4" on the bottom too.

When you guys tied into the basement, was your water cloudy for a few days. I am having this issue and I am wondering if the pvc needs to break in like a new skimmer.
