Hmmm... are your "rakes" actually long algae scrapers? I find I periodically need to level the sand in my DT, and I've been using some of wifey's* kitchen utensils. But, I actually already have two long scrapers (duh)! Thanks you for nudging my aging brain...

(Leveling Explanation: I have 4 reasonably high output powerheads hidden in my rockwork - two at either end of the DT. All that water being pushed out by the powerheads results in an equal amount of water flowing back into the powerheads, and that flow just so happens to stream across the lower front of my tank. This leaves a bare spot in the sand that is dead center in the front of my tank.)
