Urchin spine trimmed?

I have a long spine urchin whos spines have been trimmed. Can't figure out why. It's still moving around and everything but it now has spines about the same size as my short spine urchin. Any idea's?

Could they have gotten a hair cut in a power head? I know my tuxedo urchin is always on my power head.

So I moved the rockwork around in my tank and went to move the urchin and Its spines just crumbled. Any idea's why this could happen?
