Venting.... am I overeacting?

I live in South jersey and finding corals and reef fish stores is a challenge. I traveled an hour today to go to reeftopia today. When I got there I didn't find anything I wanted, but a friend told me that there was another place that was good across the street. I kindly asked the accociate where exactly it was and he pointed and said over there with a smirk. I then asked him if he didn't want to tell me where it was and he said yes, why would I want to tell u about a competitor? I said, isn't that what reefers do, help each other out? He said not for the unmentioned other store he wouldn't. I asked why and he said they "crash tanks".I said "that's kind of a d$%K head thing to do, I'll take my chances over there, and i left. I went to the other place and it was one of the cleanst healthiest livestock well put together fish stores have seen, and they were very nice. I told them what the guy at reeftopia said and they apologised on his behalf and refused to throw insults back path them. He said that's not what we r about. The other guy wasnt even the owner and I thought he should be trying to help people in the hobby, not hold them back. This is the first time I have ever in 20 plus years in the hobby I have had anyone not try to help me strive in the hobby. My Lfs always recommends other places if they don't have what I want. I get it's a business and all,but isn't more healthy aquariums in the hobby and good friendly customer Service good as well? Anyway, am I overreacting or was he being a jerk? This i

Probably could've been more helpful in my opinion.. I'm in SJ myself and I go to Aquarium Center all the time in Blackwood. I've been going to them for about 7-8yrs and they've always pointed me in the right direction if it was something they couldn't handle or could order for me.

That's odd. I find most are eager to help even if it means sending someone somewhere else. Where in south jersey are you?

Arr, them northerers is a odd bunch. Eye used to live thar meeself till I moved southerlee, now eye is OK.

So yeah, the shore air restored my sight.
But, two options in central/south are Tropaquarium for tanks (they sell them at cost) and supplies and Aquarium Care Center for livestock (though John is starting to stock up nicely on popular tanks and such, my last tank and ATO was from ACC at competitive prices).

I'd probably drop a line to Reeftopia today as well, maybe with a link to this thread. :)

To our neighbors down the street thank you for the kind words and referral we have a new member in the store!

Sounds like a jerk but in defense we all have bad days.

I'm in South as well. My main shop is Ocean Aquarium but I also gone to Reef about (which is a great shop), Aquarium Center, Aquarium Care Center, Trop, etc.... As mentioned above most people I deal with are helpful and point me in the right direction.

Where in South are you?

I am closest to AO and Will has never steered me wrong. South trips I stop at ACC and Trop.

Theres a newer place called Sea Gem Aquatics, south jersey area, thats has a good selection for being so small, more fish than coral though. They are very nice, and can order about anything for you at a good price. Then there is Aquarium Center and TSM (who has a big coral selection!)
