Hey guys, here is the story. I made the move to a new sump last night and everything went great. However, for some reason when I got home from work today, all my LPS and Softies looked pissed off. My torch and frog spawn looked weak, my trumpet look dried up, my devil's hand looked shriveled, shrooms are shriveled and the GSP that John gave me didn't look so happy either. My zoas and SPS do not seem to be effected. However, I haven't seen much polyp extension from the SPS. I am freaking out a little. Could is be my water is too clean? I mean almost did a 30 Gallon water change yesterday due to changing out the sump. I am see 0 Phos and 0 Nitrates. I disconnected my bio-pellets just in case. I haven't dosed anything before or after the sump change except I used Prime when I made the new salt water. any ideas?? :nervous

90 Gallon Tank Params are
Salinty 1.026
Temp 78*
PH. 8.2
Alk 10dKh
Calc 480
Phos 0ppm
Nitrate 0ppm

what were your parameters prior to the switch? did your old sump have a fuge or sand bed in it?

This just happened to me on sunday My tank survived the hurricane both looks like it succumbed to a sump change. I don't understand. All parameters were spot on.

Did u by change use a different salt in your new water?

I almost had a total take wipeout because of a sump CLEANING where I emptied out my sump and wiped and scrubbed it down replaced some reactor tubes that were getting nasty and old. Did like a 50 gallon water change on a 150 gallon/ 180gal total water volume. I made a LOT of changes though.

1. Put Calcium Reactor online
2. Added 500ml of Biopellets
3. Replaced Carbon
4. Replaced GFO
5. Cleaned Ozone reactor
6. Cleaned Skimmer/Skimmer Pump
7. Cleaned and Flushed my Manifold.

I think I did TOO MUCH maintenance and that's what caused my issues.

parameters were all the same except for my calc and alk, alk was at 9 and cal was 440. and yes, my old sump did have a fuge with a deep sandbed and live rock. My current one has one too, minus the deep sand bed. I went from a 30 gallon long to a 20 gallon long to save some space under the stand.

Well, I added 2 koralia, 1050 and a 750 for additional flow. I gave a vinegar bath to my durso drain, return line, return pump. I also created a manifold so I can just run all my reactors through my return pump. Maybe I am having the same issues? how long did it take for your tank to go back to normal or what did you do?

I also, put in a new cone skimmer, I also gave that a vinegar bath prior. Do you guys think I am going through a mini-cycle. I havent tested my ammonia levels, it didnt occur to me to check. I will check it when I get home from work. I will also buy a bottle of special blend to add some bacteria to my tank to help out if it is a mini cycle. If i do have ammonia in my tank, should I use PRIME to lessen the effects of the ammonia????

you may be going thru a mini cycle if you removed the dsb from the old sump. When removing substrate you have to be careful not to remove too much at one time. I would definitely test ammonia.

GE Silicone II Clear. It's the same one I have used before without any issues.

yeah i think so too, ill definitely check my ammonia levels when i get home from work. should i dose PRIME?

GE Silicone II contains moldicides.....not good.

You actually want plain old GE Silicone I, or a silicone from your LFS made specifically for fish tanks.

Paul, I think you are right about the fungicides in the siliconeII. I remember looking at them and being tempted but noted various brands had different additives...anti microbial, anti fungal. Because of this I chose plain old aquarium sealant/silicone.

It was actually easier finding aquarium sealant then it was to find the right GE.

+1. GE Silicone II has been known to wipe out tanks.

I am going to shoot myself in the foot if this was the case. I don't get it though, ive used the GE Silicone II before on the sump I used previously without ill effects. That was the reason why I went with II. I really hope it is just a mini cycle and not the silicone. I even let it cure for 2 weeks before installing the sump. this is not good, not good at all.

Some people have no problems what so ever using 2 others have their whole tank wiped out in a matter of hours. This would lead me to believe there are manufacturing inconsistency or there is an issue with shelf life. I really hope I'm wrong and this is just a mini cycle.
