Hey guys my name is Pete. i have been in the aquarium hobby for a little while now. About 9 months ago i started a Salt water adventure and now i am currently adding corals to that tank. I figured this would be a great site to join because outside of ordering corals online i have no idea where to purchase some quality corals in NJ. I am looking forward to being a part of this community.

Hello all, my name is Vin, I've been a lurker on here for some time and spend most of my time on RC and MR but decided to start being more active here as it is more local and hopefully attend some club meetings so I can learn as much as I can. A little info aboug me, I jumped into saltwater with no experience 2 years ago with a 120gl tank that my mother originally fianced as I did all the husbantry and maintenance of the tank. I since then added a 75gl and a 20gl. I meet a few of you guys already from RC local nj reef forum there but would like to meet more people in my area which is Bridgewater. Hopefully I will attend the next club meeting as I still have much more to learn.

Welcome to the club Vin and Pete. The next meeting is in Branchburg so you are close. If you have any questions feel free to ask as we are a close knit community that's willing to help each other out. I'm located in Piscataway so If you ever need a hand ask.

100MEDIA$IMAG0138.jpgHi,
My Name is Sam and I am a high school chemistry teacher in New Jersey. This is my 45th year of teaching and I still love working with kids and science. Recently (In Sept.) I got a 75 gallon salt water tank and a 29 gallon sump tank from a generous person who upgraded his tank to 125 gallon and had this one left over in his garage. I have cleaned it up and have a sand bottom and now the entire thing is running. I just put in the salt (instant ocean) and the water (it was deionized before I started) is now at 1.023 salinity. I am happy. But the kids are asking when we can get some rock or fish for the tank. We're trying to raise some funds, but obviously starting from nothing, it's quite a challenge. I continue to spend my own money, but would love any suggestions or ways to get some started rock without the couple of hundred dollars that it would cost. I guess I'm looking for tax deductable contributions (money or stuff) to the school so we can get this reef club off the ground.
What do you think?
Am I crazy for starting such a club?
Hope I can get ideas and info from you experienced reef managers.

P.S. A picture is attached to show how far we've come.

I think its a great idea!!!! I would be up for donating a few pieces of both live and dry rock to get you started. Where are you located?

Welcome Sam. You’ve come to the right place. The one major issue with having a saltwater tank in a school is the summer months when no one is there to care for it. If you’ve worked out that detail, you’re on your way to exposing kids to the saltwater experience.

As far as adding fish, the tank first has to completely cycle…..you might wish to google cycling a saltwater tank. It typically takes a month or so. What occurs is the development of bacteria to convert ammonia to nitrite to nitrate. Ammonia is very toxic to life (at very low levels) while nitrate can be tolerated at higher concentrations. Accordingly, you need to put test kits on your wish list or use your chemistry knowledge and school equipment to test for the above three chemicals.

You most likely will find folks on here willing to donate or sell stuff at greatly reduced prices. When you’re ready for coral (if you wish to take that route), I can donate a bunch of soft corals.

Best of luck

Hi Ed,
The school is in Hopewell Valley, NJ. I live in Philly, but have commuted every day for the last 10 years. Hopewell is close to Philly (about 25 miles) .
