Welcome Justin. Start a “Tale of the Tank,” and show us what you have. I see you’re in Fords, not too far from me, and almost in walking distance to the swap. You’ll have a blast at the swap…..see you there.

Hi my name is John born and raised in central nj. I i have a 5 year old little girl and beautiful wife. We broke in to the hobby about 4years ago when we got a 10gallon tank and started with a saltwater reef. We lost power from a hurricane n lost that setup. So 2 years ago i bought and fixed a 35 gallon corner tank. Lost all my fish and coral in hurricane sandy but quickly started back up and now we were given a new 55 gallon tank from a freind .

New here just wanted to say hello to everyone

Just introducing my self. Got back into the hobby about 10 months ago. I had gave my 55gal. to my brother and after 4 years he offered to give it back. I couldn't say no. Picked it up at his house across town set it up. He had a penguin 330 filter on it. I took that off and put a fluval canister just temp until I got the sump built for it. One week later after setting it up I tested the water quality. Did never put fresh new water. Transferred all old water with the tank. Now here comes the shock. He had 1 clown 2 engineer gobies full grown and 3 damsels. Rocks had hair algae all over and no color. Tested the water and nitrates were off the charts. Not only nitrates everything was off the charts. As I worked on water changes at the same time got my 20gal. Sump finished. Now all I had to do was drill the tank and pipe it all together. I drained the tank with only leaving 25% of water inside. Set everything up and started to drill tank with fish, rocks and water (saying to my self this is freaking nuts lol) in the tank. Once I got it all put together and a lot of water changes. With in a month and a half. It started to come to life. 10 months later I have coralline algae growing corals are thriving and fish are happy. What an adventure that was.

Hi, thought I'd introduce myself. I found this site through reefcentral.

I was in the hobby in the 80's with a fish only tank. A founding member of the then Ocean Country Aquaist Club. Which I'm sure is defunct. One of the editors from the fish book out of Neptune NJ was involved.

My salt tank was a 125 g in the wall setup that ran for quite a few years. It was the dark ages compared to now. Under-gravel filters, Super-king hanging pumps and air driven pumps. My lighting was a 4 foot florescent with aquarium blubs. I had maybe 400-500 dollars total not counting fish.

So now I'm in a different home, kids are just about grown up, and about 4-6 years from retirement, and the bug is back. I'm enjoying all the nerdy research and amazed at all the changes. My goal is to take my time and enjoy the planning part as well as the build. Might wait a couple of years to set the ball in motion. Have tons of questions.

I hope to setup my future tank in my office, with a possible in wall application to the dinning room. Wife not thrilled about that part...lol

I'm thinking in the 220 gal range with a sump system right below in the basement. I would like to have the basement be my mad scientist fish room. With sump, frag tank, and possibly a nursery as part of the system.

I think my project will cost more than $500 this time... :)

Thanks for listening...

Mark...
