Welcome Joey.
Biggest advice I can give you is ask as many questions as you possibly can. And if possible. Latch onto someone in the club who has a successful setup similar to what you intend to build. This will increase your success ten fold. Trust me when I say there are a hundred ways to do this hobby. And most of them are correct. The key is stability in water chemistry, lighting and flow. Adjusting and changing these things can and will give you a headache. Start slow and make changes one at a time and allow the change a reasonable amount of time to take place. (Like weeks) before making another change. Also understand that this includes things that you may not think is that dramatic. Like feeding schedule and general maintenance. Even these seemingly innocuous mundane tasks are better scheduled and not haphazard. So in a nut shell stability wins the race. Best of luck and happy reefing Freind.
Welcome aboard njreefers sweet way to start out , much luck to youHello All!
My name is Al, I have had freshwater tanks most of life up till about 10 years ago when my sons blue lobster crawled out and freaked out my wife! Fast forward to early March 2020 and I start to think to myself... Self, you need a hobby that will keep you interested and active both physically and mentally. Yeah, yeah but then life gets in the way and I forget about my conversation with myself. Then about a week or so later my 20 y/o son walks in the house with a little table top “Petco Special” with the whole set up. Ding! Lightbulb goes off in my head, there it is a hobby staring me in the face, but this time since I’m older (and have a little more money now thank God) I’ve always wanted to do Saltwater. So I started binge watching and researching everything I could. Finally as
the middle of March rolls around I’m ready to go! Then COVID hits, stuck at home like the rest. After a few weeks, I guess I was driving my wife crazy and she said you need a hobby!
Done! 2 days later I find a seller from Manhattan Reefs looking to get rid of a 18 month established Red Sea 250...Picked it up in full PPE gear (basically a 50% Water Change and 95% Sand Bed change)...
Needless to say, I am very excited and happy to have had a head start!
Here are some pics of my system, current parameters (cool app ReefTrace) & Current Livestock. Looking forward to learning & interacting here!

Hello Everyone!
My name is Joey. I've been keeping fish for close to 4 years now. The first 3 years were dedicated to freshwater, but I've always curious about reef tanks. At first I was like, "What's so special about coral? They just sit there and you watch them." Then I started to watch videos and read forums much like this one on the chemistry, gear, and husbandry it takes to properly run a reef tank. I thought it was so cool! I scoured the internet for something that can get my feet wet and went for a 15 gallon AIO last January. I made a lot of mistakes, but I also believe I had a lot of success and learned so much along the way thanks to the many forum posts, friends, and videos.
I'm a nurse at the local hospital here and I love my job!
Warning: Quick Covid mention. Unfortunately, last month I was one of the first people in the hospital to be diagnosed with Covid-19. It was a tough journey, I was sick for 1 week then I was hospitalized for 2 weeks. And in that time my reef tank crashed.
I'm looking to start over with a larger tank with better automation! I've been looking around for ideas until I stumbled upon this website. I was browsing for close to 2 weeks now and finally decided to join.
I'm excited to take on the new chapter of my hobby.
