What happened to my Nori!

I went to my local Oriental market today (Route 18 in East Brunswick) to stock up on nori, since I was running low. They had re-done the store over, and everything was moved around. I asked four different employees where I could find nori, seaweed, sushi wrap….and no one spoke English. I finally found the nori on an isle end, and the shelf space was a fraction of what they use to have. And to my disappointment, they didn’t have the brand I prefer.

I’ve never been into it, but I’ll have to check the market on Old Post Road in Edison.

I know the Asian Market on Ryan road and Route 79 in Marlboro has this stuff. Never knew which one was the right one so i never bought there.

Discovered the same issue a few weeks ago Paul. They didn't have any type of dried seaweed only the roasted. I will try the store Jeff recommended...

There is also one in Middletown on 35 N ...they may be moving soon...think they were having a sale the last time we drove by.

Not sure if I'm missing something, but from what I understand about Nori, it's all toasted/roasted. Maybe "drying" takes place at a lower temp, but I'd think it's all the same either way. So long as it's unseasoned, I'd think it's all the same.

I ran into the same problem a couple of months ago. If you look on that end cap. You'll find the same brand in smaller packages, they don't have the big ones any more. I picked up 4 packages for Daniel. Now if you knew someone with a chinese character set windows versions you could do a web search but good luck with that. You have to bring Dave with you next time to translate.

Also, if you guys really want selection, there's Mitsuwa in Edgewater. It's a real pain to get in and out of, but they have an entire aisle of Nori/seaweed.

Kan Man Oriental Market at 511 Old Post Road in Edison did not have that specific brand of Nori that I wanted. Also rather limited on selection. However, because of the need to have some, I bought this brand…which stated that is was roasted.

Thanks for the other leads on other oriental markets in the area. I’ll check them out when I’m in the neighborhood. I also have my daughter’s boyfriend, who manages a kitchen at a large restaurant in NYC, checking with his oriental purveyor….according to him the largest purveyor of oriental food goods in the US. The unfortunate thing is that if they do have it, I’ll have to buy a minimum of a case. Sushi anyone?

From what I have heard the roasting process removes some of the nutritional value and it tends to fall apart much easier. I have always used and had better results with the dried.
