Got to disagree with the Petco statement, at least here in Brick.
Think its a store by store assessment.
We've got a guy at the Petco here, Andrew, who is top notch. He runs quite a few tanks of his own (including seahorses), keeps their saltwater department stocked, super clean, and very well cared for. In their limited space he has a great marine operation going as far as a commercial shop is concerned.
On top of that he offers tons of experience and advice and is a nice guy to boot.
The rest of the staff is well trained and knowledgable regarding the marine department and if they don't know something they'll tell you so.
Its 5 minutes down the road from the meet tomorrow.

I've bought more then a few fish from this store and they are lightyears beyond my LFS's.

I agree with Mark. I went to this Petco in Brick because 3 others I went to didn't have 20 gallon tanks, and I needed one to fix my sump. It had by far the best saltwater section of any chain store I have seen. I still have fish from Petco when I started my first tank, before I found out about Tropiquarium (RIP) and ACC. I never had a fish disease from those fish. While I would prefer to support a local store, I would not have been uncomfortable getting one from that store using a quarantine tank. I told the clerk and she said she would introduce me to the person in charge of the saltwater section the next time I came in.

Andrew’s a really good guy, knows his stuff, and is generous with his time. The guy just likes talking the hobby. If it was closer I’d go more often, but as is, it’s still on my short list for fish and inverts. Knowledgeable staff, quality livestock, and for the most part great prices. When I couldn’t find emerald crabs at any of my LFS a few months ago, I called ahead and they had several, about $6 each. And the one I bought all ate bubble algae.
Unfortunately my more local Petco’s have some of the worst-kept SW sections I’ve seen. My only temptation is to rescue their stock.

Brick Petco is good, when that kid leaves I can’t see them keeping it up. It’s a shame, he does a good job and proves that hiring the right people can have a huge impact on the business.

That said it’s hard to disagree with the overall sentiment, all of the Petcos are usually pretty bad.

It's right down the street from me and agree it's not bad for a chain. Andrew loves to talk so be ready. I have fish and coral from there with no problems.
