I feel your pain, just got hit with $1200 also. JCPL said rates are close to 20% higher than last year and avg temp was 2 degrees warmer, than July of last year.
I reduced my MH photo period from 10 hrs. to 8 hrs, along with some other energy saving things around the house, to try and save energy. Jeez i also converted all my house bulbs to CFL's last year to save energy. Cant imagine my bill if i didn't do that!!
I'm sure its more than just the tanks. I live in an old farm house, no central AC so i have 5 window units. I know they are energy hogs.
Lights are Vho on the FOWLR and 250watt Mh on the reef
Wow, ours was 517.00 and we are running central air 2 refrigerators 210 gallon reef with 2/400 Mh's with a monster pump for the return from the basement. We are keeping off the 3rd MH in the middle to keep the heat down We have our frag tank that is running 2 250 MH's plus all the refugium lights and T5 actinics for 2 systems. Plus we have 110 gallon tank with a 17 inch redtail catfish. He eats left over meat, lol 2 large fans in the basement for air circulation. 60" DLP 42" LCD 32" LCD 26" LCD 15" LCD ceiling fans that run non stop in every room. So I guess we are getting away cheap compaired to you guys lets hope it stays that way woooohoooooo dodged that huge bullet
wow bobcreef (and bconn/dnov99) - I think if my bill were to go into the 4 digit area - I seriously may re-consider the idea of my 120 and take a real hard look at a nano.
Then I may go tell my financial advisor to take a hard look at some utility stocks.
My tank isn't up yet - so I'm getting a good baseline look at what my bill would be. When the tank is up maybe i'll tell the kids to play less on the Wii (that energy hog ;D) and go outside more!
In all fairness i do also have a built in pool and an 11'X16' pond and some of the greenhouses are still running. But this is the biggest bill i have evey had.
One thing I did notice last week, was that my chiller when it turned on was actally heating my fish room so much that it was doing more good than bad.
It was actually heating the room so much it was making the tank water warmer than it should have been and creating a chain reaction, even with exhaust fans. So I tried turning it off and the tank has not gone above 82.
I too also have pool, 8000 gal koi pond with two pumps, UV light, and bar in basement, with additional appliances, so it def all isnt attributed to the tank.
Same observation on the chiller heating the room wich in turn heats the tank water. Room temp has gotten as high as 89. Now running a AC unit in fish room to exhaust air outside and keep the balance.
On behalf of our checkbook......when does winter start? Oh wait...lol
I'm with you this month, Bob. Unfortunately. Something has to give, unfortunately the tanks aren't the worst of it (the pool, AC, dehumidifier,... ). We've seen a 500$ jump in our AC bill from winter running costs.
