Have not been to Jamiaica in many years, want to go back someday. Aruba is the next trip but that is not until Feb 2011. Trying to shoehorn a trip in sometime this year.

Congrats Whitebear!! You doing your check out dives in Jamaica?? You buy any equipment yet?

yes, we are doing our final dives in Jamaica. No equipment yet .. I am going to have to open a few more business before I can afford it ... it is sooo expensive. Plus, we are planning to dive in Europe as well. They have totally different set ups there, so what you buy here will not fit with their cylinders.

I don't know who told you this, but there are only 2 types of fittings for SCUBA tanks DIN and Yoke. Both are used and recognized all over the world. I have friends that take their regs to Europe and dive there with no issues.

Congrats on your certification. It truly is a fascinating sport.

Thats awesome!! I need to do some warm water diving soon!! What kind of business do you own??

The European setups, if I'm correct the major difference is they use DIN 1st stages instead of yoke. I personally use a DIN with my High Pressure tanks, so you should be able to buy things if you wanted to.

I guess we need to explore more and dive at different sites and countries before we decide what kind of equipment we need.
I have too many businesses ... need to downsize ;D. The primary is printing co in sj.

Yes the major difference is most of their tanks are configured for DIN regs. Not a bad choice as the newer DIN valves have the insert so you can convert them to a yoke fitting. They also make a converter to switch your DIN regs to a yoke so you can use them in areas where DIN tanks aren't common such as when renting tanks on vacation as most rental places use Al 80s as rental tanks. My regs for now are yoke, but I am planning on a set of most likely HP 100s so I'll be converting it to a DIN first stage.

I'm really itching to get wet but travel just isn't in the budget right now. The local waters need to warm up really soon.

Id love to go to back to jamaica...i dont dive or anything, Ill just tag along! And I dont think snorkeling would be the same when I know people are down there up close, seeing everything in HD. I mean dont get me wrong, I loved snorkeling in Negril, it just wouldnt be the same.

Where are we staying? :p

did both in Negril off 7 Mile Beach. snorkeling was fun but if you can hold your breath a decent amount of time you can dive to the bottom and check things out.

How you get to bottom? Dont they make you wear a jacket? Or did you go on your own?

no we got choice to wear a jacket or not and i'm a strong swimmer. I just held my breath and went down, surprised myself how long i could stay down. even found some Cleaner Gobies sitting on a coral

I went snorkeling in Bonaire and was able to make it to the bottom even with a jacket. The flimsy snorkeling jackets are crap. I just made sure all the air was out and down I went!! Most people don't need a jacket because the saltwater makes the human body very bouyant.

would it look real stupid to go to a swimming training sessions at 25 and prior navy? i would LOVE to start diving but i'm not a swimmer.

Buddy do yourself a favor and go for the swimming lessons not only for you but for that little baby. If you were ever in a situation where you needed to swim and couldn't that wouldn't be too cool! ;) Plus you get the sense of accomplishment and a chance to go for your dive cert.
