On my 30 cube i am running an Odyssea 4 which is rated at 320 gph. Anything in the 300-350 gph range should be fine with a spray bar return.

so you have softies in your tank would say 4 54 watt t5's be enough for most of them?
one more question on parameters you said as clean asI can get it. I meant as a reef tank with calcium mag. ph. salt.

Yup I keep leathers, zoas, shrooms and xenia with my SH. What size tank are you planning on? Aren't 54w T5'S 48"? I run PCs on my Sh tanks, but T5's are fine too. I would run 2 actinic and 2 daylight bulbs.

Regular reef parameters are fine EXCEPT temperature. You want to aim for a 72-74F temperature range.

Sure you can as long as your house has AC. Run the tank open topped and use a fan. You will evaporate more water but the tank will stay cool.

On the 30 cube I run a Coralife 96w power quad PC fixture and on my 37 gallon I run a 2x65w Current Orbit PC fixture.

If I were to put 2 H. Reidi in a 30 gal. cube and did not want to breed. do you think 2 male or 2 female which gender looks better and swims around more? nothing personal ladies or men

Matt now that you have had your tank set up for a while do you wish you went to something bigger? I did not purchase anything yet. do you run a protein skimmer?

Personally for a same sex tank I prefer all males, but either will do. I prefer males because you get to enjoy all the daily rituals of courting, pouch flushing, colour display, dancing, without the added headache of having fry. Females will do the same, but not as readily as the males and without the pouch flushing.

The 30 cube is great for 2 horses, I had 4 in there at one time and they weren't as active possibly due to less room per horse. The 37 comfortably holds 4 horses due to it's larger footprint. If I had the space I would definitely go larger as the horses will use every bit of room that you give them .

I run a protein skimmer on the 37 but not the 30 cube.

Matt, since we're asking questions for you, I have another one.

What kind of fish can you keep with the seahorses? Right now I have a clown goby inside with them because he was nipping at the SPS in my 120. Aquatic Obsessions has two ORA naked clowns and I want them. If I take the clown goby out do you think I can keep 2 naked clowns with the two horses inside the tank?

And now that I mentioned that they'll probably be gone so you might as well tell me what other fish you can keep with them. If I could get my helfichi firefish out of my 120 I think he'd make a perfect roommate for the seahorses because they're both docile.

Mike,

Clown gobie is fine, clown fish are not. Clowns tend to be aggressive eaters and can become territorial as they mature and pair bond.

Firefish, shrimp and small gobies (I try to avoid the larger sand sifting gobies), some blennies. Guess I really need to push the folks to get the new tank mates guide finished up.

Matt I currently have a 55 gal.tank where I would set up the 30 cube why not use the 55?
its the same height as the cube only longer. would this work?

Yes it will and it will allow you to add more horses if you'd like. You could easily do 6 horses in a 55.

i saw mikes seahorse tank yesterday, its pretty nice. seeing that and all this seahorse talk is starting to make me think about setting one up.

In your opinion what would be the best way to flow the tank. if a canister what size do you think would work? also I'd need a lot of things for the horses to attach to what do you use? do you use gorgonians? like corky fingers or knobby sea rods?

For filtration a canister will work as long as you keep it clean. I would look for something in the 350-400 gph range. As mentioned before a spray bar return is your best bet as it really spreads the flow out across the tank.

As for hitches, I use mainly live rock and some macro algaes. I have gorgonians too but they are more for decoration. The horses will hitch onto anything you put in the tank. Mine really like thermometers, filter tubes, power cords and anything else they can wrap their tails around.
