Right so if it's coming from the rocks, that's where algae is getting it's source from, leading to no phosphate readings. I've been through the same exact thing last fall.

+1 a must have. Also, vortech owners, you might want to grab a battery backup. If power goes out while you are sleeping, at least you'll have circulation before you turn on a generator.
I calibrate my refractometer / check to see if it's calibrated a few times a week. If you don't rinse it with RODI, it won't give you adequate readings. It's possible but that would mean your salinity is off. The orange box @ 1.026 gives you ca 490, alk 13dkh, 1440 mag.
