    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Yeah, I don't completely understand it. The hardest deposits seem to grow in areas of high flow, like near the pump intake. Some of the deposits are soft and crumbly and seem to contain precipitated strong calcium chloride, if you break them the pH shoots way up. Some of these formed fantastical...

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Combined a 50g water change with a really annoying procedure I'd been putting off. I discovered a while back that my enthusiastic use of two part caused huge calcium deposits In the sump. I tried to work on them manually once while the tank was running and found to my horror they contained...

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Getting ready to do a big water change/detritus vacuum. The cyano/dinoflag./brown crap is way down, I'm actually happy to see the hair algae! I turkey baster'd the rocks yesterday and could barely get enough to clog a filter pad. I've been reading about treating hair algae with hydrogen peroxide...

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

I am sending the Lumatek ballasts back to Marine Depot, they are replacing them under warranty. I think with my diminished coral population I can soldier along with 1 1/2 ballasts until I get the replacements, like a week. When I get the replacements, I'm going to go back to running them at 250W...

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Marine Depot was very helpful about the ballasts. They are calling Lumatek for me to see what they'll do. The ballasts are just about seven months old so apparently still under warranty. If I do get good ones back, I'm just going to start saving for LEDs. and I'm gonna hook them up right by the...

AIs do look cool but also very pricey. I kind of lean towards the Radions because I know a little bit about the company, but I would need two units for $1500, that kind of blows my mind, there has to be a cheaper way. One thing I saw on RC about AI was that they have been promising the new unit...

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Reefpocalypse 2012 continues, the OTHER Lumatek ballast failed. I will be calling them tomorrow for info on repairs. Maybe I was doing something wrong? The cable to the tank was too long? It shouldn't matter. On the plus side, I managed to round up enough ballasts to get some light on the tank...

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Ecotech was pretty nice on the phone, they clearly have regrets about the old "IceCap" battery unit. They said to send them everything but the wet side and they would likely replace the controller and send it back. Anyone have opinions on LED systems? I would rather invest the money in a new...

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Jim, that's very nice of you but that is from ten years ago. I don't have flatworms yet. When I did, I tried C. Varians and found it to be pretty useless. It doesn't do well in current, it likes to get sucked into powerheads. Cool to watch it eat flatworms though.

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Very bad things today. Short power outage. During the power outage, I hooked up my for tech battery backup. It immediately popped and started to smoke, so I threw it out the front door. It burned out the controller for my vortech mp 60. The power outage also seems to have burned out one of my...

    Happy Father's Day

Sorry about this Ed. I am not a religious person but I am thinking about Josh and my fingers and toes are crossed every time I hear about one of these (hopefully minor) setbacks.

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Oh believe me, you're on speed dial. One thing I am going to take care of soon is the pile of broken coral and other rubble towards the front of the tank. That is a potental detritus trap and nitrate factrory that doesn't need to be there. A lot of it is broken monti caps pieces. I'm also...

    Happy Father's Day

You poor guys...I woke up to the smell of frying bacon and brewing coffee, was showered with cards and gifts, and forbidden to lift a finger the whole day. I guess that tantrum I threw last year really paid off! Either that or the expensive gifts and car repairs I paid for last week... Sadly I...

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

When my order comes my urchin population will be at six, which means to me I'm going to give some awya once this all blows over. I like the long spined and painful diadema, but the cheap Caribbean packages don't offer those guys. The MRC is definitely on the docket. Right now I'm getting good...

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

So every day I am putting a filter pad in the trough and hitting the brown cyano/dinoflaggelates stuff with a turkey baster. Then I ditch the pad after rinsing it in the sink a couple times. It's amazing the amount of brown fishy-smelling gunk I'm getting out of the pad, it's like squeezing a...

    Any Firearms enthusiasts??

Do you know of anybody who has been indicted for posession of an M1 carbine in NJ ever? My feeling is that they kind of avoid the law unless they are trying to heap charges onto someone with another offense. Remember there have to be charges brought and an indictment. I get the feeling that...

    Any Firearms enthusiasts??

Nope, five or or so years ago. We even joked about the M1 at the police station. My town is more pro-gun then some others in NJ.
