I like the new aquascaping a lot better than the solid wall but IMO it's a little too far in the other direction. It would be cool if you could add an arch or a shelf or something to put a little more "meat" in it. Otherwise, it's a big improvement. Are the inhabitants getting used to it?

I use two 50g drums the same way as you're thinking about. I have one with fresh water and one for salt water. XM's are good. I've had luck with 12K Reflux in the past but have switched to the new IceCap bulbs and really like them (and they're a sponsor!).

Looks like diatoms. My experience is that it burns itself out about 3 to 4 days after your patience reaches its end and you snap!

Nope. They don't consume much calcium. Regular water changes and dosing when necessary will be all you need.

Do you normally have luck with rics and this one just isn't doing well or is this the first one and it's not doing well? The reason I ask is that for whatever reason, I can't keep rics at all. Everytime I've tried they shrink away until they're gone. Apparently there is something about my system...

I'm not sure what Ca Reactor you have but you should not open the effluent valve all the way. I forget what the flow rate should be. It's something like 100mL a minute or something. I can tell you that our effluent runs a little quicker than that. The way I dial it in is to get to a point where...
