Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
It really depends on what you plan on keeping and where your pH generally hovers. A Kalk reactor is good for raising your pH and adding calcium to your water. IMO, I would go with Kalk reactor before a Calcium reactor which seems to be the opposite of conventional thinking. Regardless, they are...
No heaters in any of the 55g buckets and the only pumps I have in them are either used for transferring water or mixing salt for the first 24 hours after it's added. My total system volume is large enough that the temp in the drums won't really effect anything at all.
I came up with a great...
It's a bit of strain on one aqualifter to pull the water up from the bottom of a 55g drum and then pump it all the way over to the sump (the distance is a bit longer in reality) so we use two in sequence like that to give us a pretty good flow.
Forutnately, you only get demerits (and serious ones at that) for stands that are under built!
Looks great E. Nice work for a first timer. As Bill said ealier, this hobby will test your skills and teach you all kinds of stuff about capentry, plumbing, electrical work, gravity, flow dymamics . ...
Here is a detailed drawing of how the Auto Top Off System works:
The RO/DI "tank" is a 55g drum with a Kent Float valve in it. The drum is fed by my RODI unit through the float valve which works to keep it continuously full. As water is pulled from it to top off the sump, the float arm drops...
"Honey, after you finish moving all of the trees from the left side of the yard to the right side, and all of those from right side to the left, you can have the rest of the afternoon to work on your tank!"
That may be too small but I'm really no expert.
What I've learned about this hobby is that I don't have a very wide knowledge base just a deep one. Meaning, I can tell everything to the most minute detail about my system. Once it goes away from that, I'm pretty much clueless!
Good point Bill! OK, pretty much EVERYONE that know's me!
We got the 100g from pond store in Farmingdale and the 150g from a fellow reefer who didn't need it anymore. Good luck with your design work. I highly recommend drawing it out first. It'll save you on trips to Lowes when you finally get...
No, we don't get any bubbles in the display. I'm not sure why because there are no sophisticated bubble traps. Just lucky I guess!
I got the check valves at Lowes. I wouldn't rely on them for anything, though. In fact, had I known better, I probably would have saved the money and not installed...
You can see the drain line coming the from the main display is this older pic. It's the 2" PVC pipe coming in to the left of the sump, with the 45* fittings and the union.
When I saw the Oceanic stand for my 180 I was shocked. I thought "there's NO WAY this thing can hold up a full tank". It does though. I guess we're all just way too conservative due to our lack of degrees in physics and weight distribution. You should see the monstrousity I built to hold my 125...
