yes, i discovered by mistake...
last year i rearrange all my rocks, and some of them end up with NOT flat anymore, most of them are almost 90 degree up! but i have no choice to leave them that way, after few months later, they all shows up with layer nicely.

assuming your concern of your PCs light are not too bright:
may be where you got it, it was too much light? therefore the color was a bit light, you can try to leave it there, if the color continuesly light for about 2 weeks or so, you can then move it lower...

can't believed someone with such beatiful/expensive fish have such bad taste...
i don't think keeping live-rock in a tank like that cost much more $...
i *think* *may be* *perhap* the way he do it with the plastic looking decor are easy to remove for cleaning... with live rock would be too...
I agree with phil519... by throwing in many fishes, and these are the ones survived...

i have a small skimmer before, with a short tube, it is really a pain when do anyhting changed, it will get crazy fast - like when using any Epoxy-glue or over feeding...
i now use a bigger one, so it have more room as buffer, so i no need to keep adjusting it anymore!

normally, it would not need to keep adjust the dial that much...
my guess is, you have it in sump? if the water level vary a lots from time to time, you may then need to keep adjusting the dial... an auto top-off to keep the water at same level at all time may help.
or on PVC frame? its looks are not as nice, but no more dead spots round the bottom of the rocks.

I originally have the sand first, then rock, it was great and easy to place and rotate the rocks whatever angle i wanted. BUT... after few months later, the inverts stir up the base, and causing the formation kind of shifted... i afraid the rock may crash one day...
