I see this taller tank and instantly imagine some euphyllias stretching tall with zoa's and mushrooms below it on the main rock and mini islands but that's just what I always imagine in tanks like this. What lighting do you have on it?
I remember your post in the introduce yourself forum saying this is a 35 gallon tank that's been up for around 8 months right? If you think of what it looked like when you saw it wherever you bought it from, does it seem like it was ever just as or more perky than that in your tank? If not it...
How does your nitrate and phopshate look?
Also what lighting do have? At least from your pictures it seem to be attached to the topmost point of you rockwork as if looking for more light.
You sound already decided for the sump but I will add another vote for doing a sump. It is more practical for being able to accommodate more nutrient export options, easy to make adjustments to those option(add media bags), reduce equipment in the actual display, and really fun to plan out the...
35ppm water is supposed to be 53mS/cm. Would it want to use both solutions to make a standard? Otherwise it seems that a single standard as close to the wanted level would be the best.
Though in your place I think I would rather trade that for the digital refractometer. Those Hanna checkers...
Randy Holmes-Farley has a long article on the relevance of ORP in a reef tank if you want to dive in.

My main take away is that unless you have an ability to constantly monitor and set notifications (like an Apex) for changes in your...
I will agree that this is not a part of a tank where trying to be creative with the cheapest you idea you can think of is not worth the risk. Even a $10 bulkhead is probably one of the cheapest and most important things in a system relative to overall costs of any tank anyways.
Those nems are magical creatures. Just when you think they are set where they put their foot they move away just to spite you. Haha
You could try to do a floating container likes strainer so it can't go hiding until you figure something better. I see those all the time at stores.
When in doubt about a fair price for used equipment I always go to Reef2reef's dry goods forum and search for the item to get an idea of what other have paid for it. For lights just be sure to also note how old they are, how much they have been in use, and look up track record for longevity.
I...
