I always took it for granted that I needed actinics with my MH setup I'm building for my new tank, and I planned to use VHO actinics.
Now I read in Ant'ny Calfo's Coral Prop book that they are not neccesary with MH, it's an aesthetic choice.
Do we have any people here who skip the blue tubes?
I am having trouble stopping my return line from siphoning into my sump. I have a siphon break, but I have found that if it's repositioned a little it doesn't work. Yesterday I got about 5 gallons of fresh water onto the garage floor because of this and there would have been more if my wife...
We have had our African Grey parrot Casey for 18 years.
Yesterday she laid an egg for the first time. How strange is that?
We moved her cage closer to the window for the first time in a long time a few weeks back. We weren't even sure it was a girl.
An article in today's New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/08/science/08fish.html?_r=1&oref=sloginmade me think about installing a microphone in my tank to listen to some tang talk. Has anyone ever played with a hydrophone and their reef?
If you go to the article on the web, you can...
My Dad died last Sunday, age 94. It was not unexpected, they had given us a window of a week to a month. He lasted 13 days from that point. It's a hell of a shock even if you're ready, and there is a lot of stuff that needs to be done in these situations. If you want to read about him, the obit...
I am making a combination rock support and spraybar out of 3/4" PVC. I'm drilling the holes right through both sides. What's a good size for spraybar holes? I did some test holes at 1/4" but that seems awful large. My main concern is avoiding eventual clogging of the holes.
Absolutely Fish has a bunch of nice acros in stock, I was by there today. They have a bright red pistol shrimp that is about 1/4" long, about twice the size of a grain of rice. $39!
I have an older chiller I have never hooked up and now I have to consider plumbing. What's a typical flow rate through one of these puppies? It's a 1/3HP, marked aquatronics.
The current issue of TFH has an article about a 2,000 gallon circular reef installed in a veterinary hospital in Red Bank. Real reef, corals and everything.
Has anybody seen it? Is access easy, Is it worth a trip?
Word comes that Brian Conger has died at the very young age of 49. I don't know how many people in the club remember Brian, but some of the first NJ Reefers v.1.0 meetings were held at his house in Dunellen. He had a pioneering cultured coral business, Atlantis Aquatics, and he sold me some of...
I haven't been making a lot of progress with my setup, for a number of reasons, so I thought that tracking my progress here might help my motivation a little. It was gonna be all set up by MACNA....
My new tank was built by Glasscages to my specs. It's 65X30X25, with a horizontal overflow. It...
I am getting ready to mount my Sequence Dart pump in preparation for drilling holes in the sump for bulkheads yadda yadda.
I noticed that the pump has slots so you can bolt it to something and I thought it might be a good idea to bolt it to a li'l piece of wood and back that up with a couple...
Is it OK to glue threaded (NPT) connections? I got some threaded unions when I wanted slip, and it seems like it would be more secure and leakproof if it was glued.
Can anyone puh-leeze pick up my PA order and bring it up here? I live in Rockaway in Morris County and I would be happy to pick it up anywhere close to there, or to my job in East Rutherford.
