Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
So what if the algae doesn't improve....or what if it gets worse. Then should we conclude that new bulbs cause nuisance algae.
It has been my experience that we are quick to hold up "proof" for the theories that we have already concluded are true, and similarly dismiss evidence when it...
I am truly not in agreement or disagreement with anyone, beyond there being more factors than old bulbs.
It is commonly known that myths take on a life of their own, and this is definitely true in this hobby.
To the point, where it becomes commonly accepted knowledge, and we all just accept it...
There is a poster on RC who I found while looking into this that stated:
"old bulbs dont cause any problems, thats the biggest myth in the hobby. Even if the XM bulb is YEARS old at WORSE it becomes the equivalent of a low PAR 15k bulb. Flourescent bulbs color shift are so slow and gradual you...
Grow lights are frequently at 6500 kelvin.
There are many hobbyists who still use 6500 kelvin lamps on their tanks. Do they experience a higher than average occurrance of nuisance algae?
Do the higher kelvin lamps "age better" when it comes to this topic since they are at the other end of the...
While your analysis may be correct, it would be useful to have some supporting scientific data.
This is the closest I could come.

I do not have direct experience with the other cleaners.
I can say, the strength of the magnet plays a big factor in the usefulness of the scraper.
I imagine ease in which the scraper glides across the tank is a factor.
Definitely recommend reef gadget or something similar to make your life...
So this is a topic I have been thinking about for a while, and frankly I do not understand how old bulbs can cause algae outbreaks.
So to be clear, this is really a question at its heart, and I am just putting down my thoughts.
First - even if this is true, I am fairly certain this is only a...
Something to consider. Each outlet with its own switch.

My approach is to turn off the pumps every feeding. This helps broadcast feed around the tank. Corals, fish, inverts...
If I want to target feed, then I also turn off my powerhead.
What about one of these?
They make them as singles and doubles?

Just a thought, instead of the two phosban reactors, what about one of these units?

It has been said, a good general rule is the fishes stomach is the same size as their eye.
Clearly, that is not a scientific measurement.

Congratulations on the new buy!!
Would be great if you could post a new pic. The one you posted is difficult to see.
You may want to use photobucket.
You harvest the algae off the screen once a week.
According to the thread it takes several months to produce the end product.
Here is a link that seems to contradict the assertion of the artice. It basically states you need to have seed turf algae.
