Is a 480 Watt T5 system going to be strong enough for that large of a tank?
I'm a MH guy...I love the shimmering look you get with the MH's and IMO the PAR is much better with MH's especially as you get deeper into the water column.
And after a lot of research and discussion in another thread...
I am in agreeance after much reading and research that Flourescent lights (PC, T8, T5) have the spectral shift to red and that Metal Halide lights over time lose their PAR rating.
So do old lights cause algae growth....the jury is still out. I can see why the flourescent bulbs would make it...
Brandon...
I looked into the CurrentUSA Sunpod a couple years ago when I first started. All I ever got was good reviews about them. The only thing some people said go wrong is that the LED panels that hold the moonlights sometimes fail. But that is an easy fix.
Great idea on getting the RO Unit now....It WILL save you headaches down the road!! Check out AirWaterIce...I have their RO and I have no complaints.
Good idea with the base rock ;)
Check for sale forums...I got my MH fixture on ReefCentral at a REALLY good price. I'd still suggest getting MH...
If this happens then I would first look into my water parameters to see if they have deteriorated. If they haven't changed at all, then I guess it would safe to assume that the bulbs caused the algae growth.
Without getting into a real scientific experiment, which I cannot do myself, there...
I can give you my personal experience. For 6-10 months my tank NEVER grew any nusaince algae, even though my nitrates have always been elevated. Around the 11-13 month mark, with my water parameters the same as they've always been my tank started to show signs of nusiance algae.
I just replaced...
Here's a response from someone I was talking to about this:
"Because you make lighting conditions more ideal for nuisance algae to grow doesn't mean you SHOULD have a noticeable outbreak in nuisance algae. that is mearly one variable required for nuisance algae. its not like new bulbs provide...
The conclusion was as everyone is saying....The aging bulbs shift in spectrum out of the blue spectrum and more into the red. Hence making the lighting conditions ideal for nusiance algae growth.
I posted this similar question on another site and the discussion had some great input. The following was one point:
"The idea that the wavelength (color) of the light under which a coral has grown can influence some characteristic of the coral is not new. Kinzie and later Schlacher both have...
I've had the new bulbs in for a week now...When they first turned on they where a lot more blue than my previous bulbs...but that is expected. But after a week there hasn't been much change. The tank doesn't look as bright as it used to....is that just because of the blue of the bulbs and is...
Brandon, nice meeting you and your cousin on Friday!! And no problem....I can talk about this stuff all day!! And I made it to the party on time so all was good ;)
