180g In-Wall Reef

its been a really long time since i posted pics, maybe tomorrow as 'work' from home.

thinking about adding a hippo tang, just wondering if you guys think i am pushing my luck with the tangs? i have a XL purple tang, a L kole tang, and a L yellow tang. the purple sometimes pesters the yellow, but never bothers the kole. i am guessing the similar body style is what bothers the purple tang. that being said, i dont think the purple would really bother a hippo too much, what do you guys think?

ok so now that the frag swap is over, and everyone is done lining on their deals, maybe i can get some feedback about adding a hippo tang to my tank.

i already have a purple tang tang, yellow tang, and a kole tang. how do you think a hippo tang would do in a 180g with these three tangs already in there?

also i plan on adding a kaudern's cardinal, six lione wrasse, and a purple firefish over the next few weeks. this would be all the fish that will added.

I dunno...if I were going to put 4 tangs in a tank - i'd try to intro them all together. If you put one in now - they may start to fight to figure out who is the boss all over again. The worst thing that could happen would be the new one introduced gets ich from the stress.

That's just me...but I've never had the opportunity to have 4 tangs so I could be just talking out my rear... 8)

Amazing how fast the coralline on the LR spread to the pumps/walls/tank. Looks great.

yeah that is my fear of having them fight and get stressed out leading to ich. but the purple only seems to bother the yellow very rarely, i assume to similar body style. thats why i am wondering since the hippo does not have a similar body style as the purple/yellow or kole, i am wondering if they would really fight that much. i guess i know its a bad idea, just looking for convince me otherwise- lol

yeah the coraline spread really fast! still battling some byprosis though :-[

Well if there is a fish that is going to get stressed it is the hippo....on the other side it is probably different enough from all the other tangs not to be a problem. Your purple is really the key if it is a rude fish then maybe it is a bad idea. I have a hippo and a naso in the QT together now and they are getting along. I think it is more on the individual fish.

The tank looks really super..that micro is sweet.

How about you'll watch your other tangs' reactions when you add any new fish. Since the fish you're looking to add are kind of on the smallish side, and if you notice no aggression upon introducing new lifestock, perhaps you can get a small Hippo, so that they'll eventually get used to him growing up to their size.

If I were you, I'd add the sixline wrasse last, or definitely after the firefish, as they can become a bit bossy themselves once they feel at home. Definitely fearless little buggers.

Love all the pictures of your tank and lifestock. Looks GREAT! :)

Great tank pics!

I don;t know, you already have three happy tangs in a 180, I think that's a great accomplishment. Four may be pushing it. And, hippos get big over time. But many folks do it.

With three tangs already established, I'd consider a fox face or a rabbit fish (But, rabbits can be reef-iffy). I know, cuase my rabbit ate shrooms, zoas, nipped clams, otherwise great fish, just really hungry!

Well guys, i decided another tang is probably pushing my luck. So I went to AO today to get a Firefish or a Banggai Cardinalfish. Unfortuneatly, Will did not have either in stock. He did, however, have a couple really good looking Sm/Med Hippo Tangs. After Will gave me a little song and dance about how these fish are from Melanesia, I was sold. So, you see, its all Will's fault! Just kidding. Anyway, he has been in my tank for about 30 minutes now and so far so good. The other tangs have basically paid him no mind at all. I was mainly concerned about the Purple Tang since he tends to give my Yellow Tang a hard time every now and then, but doesn't seem too concerned about the new guy at all. I will continue to keep a close eye on relations. I have had Hippo Tangs in the past and they always seemed a bit skiddish at first, hiding a lot. When I finally put this guy in the tank after three hours of acclimation, he was pecking on the algae clip within ten seconds, I was shocked! He has been out in the public for the past 30 minutes, and has already eaten some Brine Shrimp. I will continue monitor and try to get some pics up soon!

Thanks again for the advice, even if I couldnt bring myself to listen to it!

came home from work today looking forward to seeing how my new addition was doing and could not find him! i opened the door to the fish tank and there was my brand new $70 Hippo Tang laying dried up on the floor! ??? :-[ :'(

Oh no! Do you think he was chased out or just lost his way? I'm really sorry about the loss. That REALLY is the worst!

I suspect the Purple Tang chased him around and he went airborne. Really sucks. Such a waste of money (and of a good fish too). He looked really cool in the tank too.

So yesterday I go downstairs and one of my MH bulbs is flickering like a disco light. I reset the ballast and it was ok for a few minutes, then the same thing. So I swapped this bulb (right side) with the center bulb to see if the problem was the bulb or the ballast. After a few minutes the center bulb (which was originally the right side) started flickering. So I went to AO to get a new bulb. All that had were 12k bulbs. My bulbs are 10k. But I was planning on changing to 12k when it was time to replace my bulbs, just wasnt planning on being this soon. These bulbs are only 8 months old (6-7 hours a day). So I bought the 12k bulb and put it in the center. I cannot believe the difference between the 12k and the 10k. Besides the fact that 12k is so much more blue, the 10k's seem soooooo much brighter. Needless to say the tank looks stupid with 10k on the end and the 12k in the center. I am torn between getting two more 12k bulbs, I do like the way they look with more blue then 10k, but I am concerned my corals are not going to do as well since they are not as bright (no where near as bright!). I know people have said there corals have done better under 12k+ bulbs, but I am just hesitant. What do you guys think?

I guess my next question would probably be where's the best (cheapest) place to buy 2 Reeflux 250w 12k DE HQI lamps?

Total with shipping is $128.89 from www.reefexotics.com

Anyone know any place cheaper?

The higher color temperature you go the slower the corals will grow but it will increase your coloration in your coral, you could run 6500 bulbs and see a ton of growth with ugly brown dark colors, where as you can run 20k's and see awsome coloration but much much slower growth, Imo 14k's are my favorite for the blue tint they give to the tank and also its a good midpoint between growth and coloration. 12k's should be fine though and you will get a nice glowy blue effect out of it, alot of it comes down on personal opinion so go by what you like ;D
