40 Breeder Reef Plan

How does a heater go bad? I don't understand.. And aren't RENAs really good? Are you sure that I should get 2 75's or 2 100's? And you're thinking one on each side right?

Heaters go bad all the time. The thermostat gets stuck, the probe goes bad, and the heater stays on when it should have gone off (or it doesn't go on when it should and the temp drops to dangerous levels). At the recommended 4wpg you should need 160w for 40g. I'm guessing that two 75s will be fine unless you keep the house extremely cold (or in the basement). You won't risk cooking the tank at this wattage and if one should stay off the other will keep the tank from getting too chilled.

Yea, I see what you mean now.. Which one's are you suggesting? Remember I'm on a slight budget of $300ish so we're going to have to work with that list above somehow :-\

Well it is right next to a window (Which almost never opens unless it gets hot from steam (cooking) because the tank's going to be in the living room/kitchen) so I still want to be on the safe side.. and Idk the temp of water that comes out from the RO/DI buckets I'll be holding so It's always good to have a heater... I think I'm gonna hold em in the basement where it's cold.. Any other thoughts guys?

Drs Foster and Smith is the way to go for sand because they ship according to $$$ spent so shipping on sand is cheap, and their prices on sand is also cheap...I would go with one bag live sand one bag dry.

What do you guys think is the best dry rock place? I think I'm going to start with dry rock as it saves alot of money so I've heard..

Well guys, as we speak the UPS guy just dropped off my aquaticlife mini-protein skimmer 115.. up to 30gallons.. Won't help much, but somethings always better than nothing right?

Btw guys I JUST got off the phone wit petland and the 40breeder is only $89.99! and If I get the rock and sand for $100 that leaves me with about another $100 or so! I could either keep saving and then invest that all into livestock, or i could maybe make a AC110 refuge, considering idk how cheap normal fuges are!

Btw guys, is Bahamas Aragonite Sand white? I really wouldn't want yellow sand =p And spanky, how does you rock looks after a few weeks of being in the tank? Fully white, or alittle yellow like in the picture??

Is the stand included in the price? I would look in the for sale forum on this site or other sites for used equipment. I wouldn't be buying anything new on a tight budget. You can also check craigslist.

I don't trust buying a used tank (leaks, cracks, scratches, rims, etc.) I just got a 40 breeder guys! Only $89.99! Step one on my journey guys!

congrats. as mentioned above, it's nice to get stuff new but it's about who your buying it from and verifying the product your buying is what you want and expect. why pay 2x the price on what you can get used w/extras and know it is just as good as new?

*rafal found me my 40breeder for $75 comes with tank/stand/snails/and a chromi which i'll be giving away. hopefully he'll give me a few frags since it was his frag tank!

Nice find! I already have a stand so I was pretty set on that, btw if you don't need anything You know i'm most likely willing to take it =D What color is chromi?

It's ALIVEEE! I picked up 45lbs of Fiji rock (plus two tiny tonga branches =p) from my LFS Reef Encounter!

The first picture is without a light and the second is with the 175watt 20k MH..

Enjoy!

You might want to put a old Mechanical filter in there or powerhead with filter just to clean up the s***t

it might start to smell if you don't put some kind of filter in there...
even an old hang on the back aquaclear filter would work...
or at a min maybe some carbon...

I wish I would have known that you needed some kind of filter. I have a duel HOB bio wheel I could have brought to the meeting for you yesterday. If your ever in the Middletown area, you can have it.

There's a Koralia 3 on the right side sorry if you didn't see it..

I'm lookin for a filter but I really have $0 right now.. =(
I picked up a old whisper from a flea market for $3.. I just use it if stuff is going to get stirred up in tank..BTW i just use floss for the media... you can pick that up at a pet smart for under $4 for a Lot of floss.. you might want to do this before adding sand.. trust me it will save your Koralia impeller
